Question about Dell Latitude D505 Notebook

Computer won't turn on

My daughter usually leaves her computer on in hibernation mode however she shut it down for a recent trip and has not been able to turn it on since. Any suggestions? My Mac had an internal on/off switch. Do Dells also have an over ride on/off switch?

Actually, my mistake, she leaves it in sleep mode. The point is, she never turns it off. Now that she did turn it off; properly shut down windows etc., the computer won't turn on with or without battery. In fact, nothing lights up in the power panel on the left "hinge" area though the computer is plugged in and the power cord is working (we've tried two, to rule a problem with that). Any more suggestions would be welcome. Budget really doesn't allow for new computer and Dell wanted outrageous $$$ to look at/repair this one.

Nope...take out the battery, plug into the wall..turn on and press F8 for safe mode..go to control panel, display settings, and turn hibernation off..and leave it off..sleep is more effective.

How to Shutdown or Turn off your Computer Properly

There's nothing wrong with powering your laptop, or desktop, down by clicking the Power button and letting it go into standby, sleep, or hibernate mode, much of the time. On your laptop, usually just tapping the Power Button will perform the same function as the following instructions.
When doing this, click on the 69966d5.jpg symbol just to the right of the Start button. This allows all open windows to be suspended properly, with current data saved. When you startup the next morning, your open programs will still be running in the background. Clicking on your logon will have your right back where you left off.
If you see the same symbol with the exclamation mark 15ca2e0.jpg, click and leave the computer alone, because it will be in the process of installing important updates before shutting down.

Nothing beats a complete "Shut Down" through the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of your Windows screen. Mouse-over to the far right icon, and click on Shut Down in the popup window. All your open programs will be closed properly, data saved, and memory and cache cleared. This is like going to bed at night with nothing on your mind, sleeping soundly, and waking up refreshed in the morning.

Then, when the computer is powered up the next time, it will be operating at its optimum performance levels without being "bogged" down with excessive leftover garbage from previous sessions. It leaves you with a fresh start-up the next time you are ready to use your computer.

To summarize, tapping the Power button most of the time, and allowing the computer to enter sleep mode, is fine. Occasionally, do a complete Shut Down to clear everything out of memory. Your laptop/desktop will thank you...lol.

How to enable hibernation in Windows XP

Hibernation is a low-power mode that laptops use when they are idle in order to save power. A hibernating computer can come back up to ready a lot quicker than a computer that is completely shut down, but it only uses marginally more power while it is hibernating.

To enable hibernation, open the Power Options applet in the Control Panel. Click on the Hibernate tab (the farthest one on the right) and check the box next to "Enable hibernation." Beneath this box you will see the amount of disk space required to use hibernation. (This amount is typically about the same as the amount of RAM you have installed, because when the computer hibernates, everything in RAM is written to the hard drive.) If you do not have enough free hard drive space, you won't be able to use hibernation; delete some old programs or files that you no longer need in order to free up some more room.

Once you have enabled hibernation and clicked Apply, you can tell Windows when to use hibernation. Go to the Advanced tab (still in Power Options). Under the "Power buttons" heading, there are settings for different actions, such as closing your laptop's lid or pressing the power button. If you want your computer to hibernate when any of these actions are performed, just choose Hibernate from the drop down list. You can also make your computer hibernate manually by choosing Hibernate from the shut down options (Start menu > Shut Down).

Your changes will take effect as soon as you click Apply or OK.

My hp pavilion elite m9152p shows a black screen. If i leave the computer for a few hours and come back the computer is still on, but the screen is black. monitor says no signal... I always have to hold...

Does the power button flash when there is a black screen? Could be that the laptop is in hibernation mode. Go to the tray icons next to the clock, click the battery symbol, more power options, and change the settings of "turn off display" and "put the computer to sleep" to "never". Usually to get the computer out of sleep mode, you just click the power button to turn it on again.
Hope this helps.

Enable Hibernation in Windows 7 Starter on Samsung N150

Sleep mode on a Windows 7 PC saves power without you having to turn your computer off and without losing any work. This option cuts the power to your monitor, powers down the hard drive and pauses all functions until you awaken the computer from hibernation. Whether you have a laptop, desktop or workstation, putting your computer into sleep mode will lower your electric bill and save money! Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your desktop. In the lower right corner of the Start menu, next to the "Shut Down" button, is a button labeled with a small, right-pointing arrow. Mouse over the arrow. The Shut Down menu appears. Point at "Sleep" and click on this option. Your Windows 7 computer goes into sleep mode. Wake your computer from sleep mode by jiggling the mouse. There may be a delay of a few seconds before your hardware powers on. All of your open programs are still open and your work is intact, just as you left it before the computer entered sleep mode. Configure your Windows 7 PC to go into sleep mode automatically when it is not used for a certain amount of time. Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click "System and Security." Click "Power Options." A menu opens. Click on "Choose when the computer sleeps" and select the number of minutes of inactivity. You can also set a separate time interval to put your monitor into sleep mode. If you set both to 10 minutes, then your PC and monitor will automatically go into sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity Your Computer in sleep mode b> First, save all of your work. Information in computer memory is not saved while your computer is on standby. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Power Management. Click Standby Beside When I Push the Power Button. Push the Power button. b> Automatically Putting Your Computer on Standby b> Save all work before leaving your computer. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click Power Management. Set the times that you want your system to go on standby, to shut off the monitor and to shut off the hard disks. Click OK. Your computer will go on standby according to the schedule you have entered. b> Putting Your Computer in Hibernation b> From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click Power Settings. Click on the Advanced tab. At the When I Push the Power Button On My Computer screen, click Hibernate. Click the Power button. Hope this helps.

My laptop keeps saying hibernating and i cannot get to menu screen.

Definition: Hibernate is another option for powering down your laptop. When you use Hibernate all data will be saved to the hard drive in a compressed form. Once you start up from Hibernate mode you will be able to work with the applications and documents you left open before putting the laptop into Hibernate.
Hibernate is best used to conserve laptop battery power when you will be away from the laptop for more than a few minutes. You can put your laptop into Hibernate overnight or when you will be away from it for a few hours. Examples: Rather than shutting down my laptop each night, I use Hibernate to help conserve battery power and enable me to access my open files quicker in the morning.

If you are not going to use your computer for a few hours, it is a good idea to put it to sleep (also known as mode) to save power. If you are not going to use the computer for more than a day, it is usually best to turn it off.

hope it helps.... please rate if you like my post...thanks

Problem with hibernating mode

the hibernate mode is cancelled due to some motion in computer aplication for example: when you press any button in key board than the sestem restart or else if the mouse is touched than the system comes out of hibernate mode. Your cause woud be of due to of mouse movement. so if you want to avoid it than you just need to cover the touch pad with a piece of cloth
