316.791961 carburetor rebuild

Bought this model 2 years ago. Used it 3 seasons. Started getting hard to keep running and finally checked out the issue. Found the primer bulb cracked. Got a primer bulb (Walbro 188-12-1) from Co-op and seemed to fit but still wouldn't start.

Started looking for a rebuild kit and found none. Called the MTD office (this was built by MTD for Craftsman) and they don't make a rebuild kit. They said because the new carb is as cheap as a kit. I looked for a new carb and found one on ebay for $28 shipped free. PN: (753-06258a)
Ordered it, it arrived 3 days later and installed it. Started right away. Comes with a few part I didn't use. Gaskets and spacers. I only replaced the carb. Also I am pretty sure the orientation of the gas lines are different on this new carb. This one is a replacement "a" model and I think I had to put the green and yellow line different than the original model. stead of coming out the top the ports come out the bottom. Just hook it up and have only about half a tank of gas. That way the return line is above gas level and can't suck gas if hooked up backwards. If you start to prime and get only air then reverse the lines.
Went to Lowes and got the jumpstart bit for a troybilt for $10. Place on the cordless drill (high speed) and start like a car...get one but make sure you have a fast drill.

My Craftsman 17cc gas weed trimmer wouldn't start.

Hi There, Check the primer bulb for tare or pin holes. Replace it. Check and clean carb jet it maybe plugged with debree. Also check for spark which you didn't say. Replace with correct plug.
Note; Do not use strong cleaners on rubber seals (O rings and gaskets) They dry up and crack.
If needed use a dabble of grease on seals

My tb70ss will start and run for 2 to 3 minutes and then stops. It also smoke fairly heavly. Any idea why it will only run for a few minutes? Matt

Hi Matt and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
Often when an engine only runs for a few minutes there is a restriction in the fuel supply or it is getting air into the system.

This little bugger is the biggest reason they draw air:
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/primer-and-hose-assembly-pi-282388.html?osCsid=1nn68dg2edk4v9o8lkr05c01j5

Check the hose for cracks / leaks and the bulb for pin holes. If your seeing air in the bulb as you depress and let go of the bulb you can be sure there is a problem in the hose or bulb.

Other sources for restrictions can be the outlet in
the bottom of the fuel tank, or a pinched hose.

The smoke is a result of the fuel mixture have a tad bit too much oil in it. That should not be a major concern at this point. It can eventually fowl the spark plug.

Your parts can be found here:

Fuel line goes into tank bottom line has filter how long is the top fuel line? this is coming from the primer bulb.

Fuel Line Replacement by SmallEng.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrXpU70Hmi0
  • The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, an output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill as it inflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs to help with reassembly.

The line with the filter needs to be long enough to reach all parts of the tank as the saw is moved, a little to long is probably better than to short. The line returning from the primer is not critical so long as it cannot fall out (mid tank). All the primer line does is return excess fuel to the tank. Does this answer your question?

Primer bubble is cracked.minimal fuel is getting to carburator. when it starts it will run a few seconds then cut off.Won't run except in full choke. Please Help

The primer bulb needs to be replaced. It is introducing air to the system and not allow fuel to flow. Replace it and check the fuel lines while you are at it.

Troybilt weedwacker won't stay running. It starts

you may need to rebuild the carburetor.Check all the gas lines for cracks or leaks.Check the primer bulb if it has one. Then try and readjust the carburetor. If that still don't work, then try to rebuild the carburetor.

Fuel line connection

Fuel filter to bottom of carb. The suction port of primer to the top of carb outlet line to other port to tank.
To tell which port is outlet put your finger on one port and push bulb if the bulb collapses and doesn't return then that is the inlet (suction) side.
Good luck

I have a homelitejacobsen 320 snowblower i replaced the primer bulb with one that has a single line running to it after it starts gas starts squrting out of the hole on the primer bulb how do i stop this

You need a "wet" primer bulb for the Jacobsen / Homelite snowblowers. A wet primer actually pumps gas - not air - a primer bulb with a hole in it was designed to pump air.

If you need a "wet" primer bulb email me and I will tell you where to get one for around $10 - basscatt at hotmail dot com
