Hi, my GE VG4056 will not rewind when the tape is stopped. It will fast-forward when the tape is stopped, and it will rewind and fast forward when in search mode, but it will not rewind when the tape is stopped. It hesitates for a few secondes the just shuts off. what can i do to fix it?
The photo sensor that senses the tape end has blown or dry soldered. It is on the right side of the mechanical deck and senses the transparent end of the tape through the square hole in the video cassette.

Hi, Does the tape move when you press rewind or fast forward. If the tape moves for a few seconds then bleeps it sound like a sensor problem. If it only bleeps when the rewind and fast forward are pressed and the play is ok it sounds like the actuator motor is faulty, this motor enables the rewind and fast forward. Hope this helps.
The belts and idler eed to be replaced. The rubber parts have become slippery. WIth the increased load at the end of the tape, the rubber just does not have enough grip to keep the reels moving.
This should not be a really expensive fix. I usually overhaul units ilke this for about $50 + parts. Figure anywhere from $10-$20 for parts.
I work at the History Channel and have a VHS that had the same troubles. I need it desperately for the show I am working on. I tapped it on a table fast forwarded it and presto! Tape fixed, crisis averted. Thank you, Thank you, thank you.
The idler wheel (that only drives the tape in play or scan modes) is
slipping too much (very common problem). Try verify this by
putting the tape in play then immediately press the fast fwd or rewind
buttons to scan the tape. On older machines, the idlers used
rubber friction tires - on newer ones, a clutch. Either replace
the tire or increase the spring tension on the clutch.
Hope Ya Fix It.

The Counter Memory function, which makes it easier to locate a specific tape segment, has been activated. To disable, press COUNTER R/M for less than one second until M disappears.
The tape may also stop because it has reached the beginning or end of the tape, depending of course on whether you are fast-forwarding or rewinding.
