Storage Devices I bought a maxtor personal storage device last year and just hooked it up. I not showeing any icon on my task bar that it is working. I unpluged one usb connection and moved it over to plug this one in. Can you help me.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

is this device being hooked up exactly the same way as your last OS , make sure you have both cables hooked up , make sure your
device is spinning up to the max RPM , if max RPM is not reached
the HDD will not work on any system , also if your windows 7 is
a 64bit version the utility disk that was provided will not work
from the old 32bit windows OS even if you were using windows
XP 64bit , go to Maxtor online inquire about 64bit windows 7 drivers
for that device .

The error 10 is an indicator of a drive gone bad. But, there are a few on there that say they were able to get them working again. If you device is under warranty, try working with Seagate support first for a replacement. If you have data on them, you may need a recovery specialist to salvage that data.

sounds like the hard drive inside the unit has crapped out. you may need to replace the HD (there maybe compatability issues in doing that).
or see if its under warranty. or buy a new one and have someone extract the info from the old drive

Is there an enable option when you right click the icon? If you're using Windows, go to Device manager and check if you can enable it from there.

First, try another USB Cable. If that does not work properly then I would suspect the box or the drive has failed. If you just bought it, return it to the store and complain. They may replace it. As for your data?

Now if you want to become techie you can remove the hard drive from the box and attach it to you computer either copy the files back if you do not have them on your computer or format the drive if you have your files. Then put the drive back in the box and try to get a refund or buy a different external. I like a metal box with an AC cord plug. Best of luck.

you have to re format it. then download file scavenger to located the lost files.

the site that makes the drive has a fix it program and drivers you can use.

You can remove and disconnect the drive with out losing data. Since it is a usb drive its always best stop the device before removing. You do this by clicking on the icon in the task bar . It has a green arrow above it. As for the safety drill have not use it but should be able to get instruction once you install it ( look at the help files ) Hope this helps

right click my computer
select manage
select disk managment
right click on the maxtor drive then select change drive leter to "L" if you like.
