Generally, the battery life of a UPS may vary a lot, but is usualy between 2 and 4 years. It will be influenced by:

  • Quality of electricity in your area. The most outages, over-voltage, under-voltage, etc. there is, the shorter the battery will last.
  • Quality of the UPS. High quality UPS have additional features to protect the battery like AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) that will kick in mild under/over-voltage to avoid using the battery. Low quality/Entry-level UPS don't have this feature and will just switch to battery.
  • Quality of the battery. Some battery will last longer than others caused by the way they are made.
  • UPS load. The more the UPS is loaded, greater will be the load on the battery during an outage, reducing its life expectancy. The UPS should not have a load higher than 70%.
  • Storage time of the battery before being installed. A battery performance starts to decay from the time it is manufactured. So, longer the battery stays on a shelf in the factory or at the distributor, shorter its usable life will be.
If you are in an area with a lot of electricity problems, I suggest you simply replace the UPS for a high quality one and maybe over-size it a little to lighten the load on the battery. As an example, you may look for an APC Back-UPS RS (this is the one I am using), but there are other great UPS on the market.

On the other hand, if the electricity in your area is quite clean with very few problems, you may try replacing the battery. However, this is not a garanty since the problem may also come from the charging components in the UPS.

Hope this helps.

We at CAAP Davao Philippines have a MGE Galaxy 3000 10KVa UPS with serial no. 13299-4. It was installed last 2003. We had three times replaced its batteries over the period of years, the latest was 2008....

On the Galaxy display you could see what is the remaining battery life time as calculated by the software. Normally after you replaced the batteries you are supposed to reset this counter using specific software by the manufacturer. According to your information you have replaced the batteries 3 times in 5 years period. This is not normal. Nevertheless since the last replacement in 2008 it appears that the battery are now reaching the end life, which is generally 3-5 years life expectancy.

I would review the following of the assumption that the UPS is fully operational and the charging system is working.

1. Do a load test or a battery impedance test to verify the batteries are good
2. I would look at the battery life time specification, whether it is 3-5 years, 5-7 years ect.
3. Check the room temperature, every 10 degrees Celcius above 25 deg reduces battery life time by half
4. Check the number of power failures/ duration of these power failures and if possible what load were on the UPS at the time of the power failures.
I hope this will help. If all verifications are to specifications, then most likely it is a software problem

I have a string of 20 batteries on an MGE Galaxy 3000. 3 of the cells tested bad on the last PM. The batteries are 3.5 years old and operate within the temperature limits suggested by the manufacturer....

It depends on the manufacturing battery life time. Generally they are 3 to 5 years or 5 to 7 years or 8-10 years. Nevertheless due to high cost of batteries most client opt for use 3 to 5 year life time. A simple internet search will give you the specification and from there you can decide what to do. If it is 3 to 5 years life time it is advisable to change the whole set. Otherwise you can replace the 3 batteries as a temporary solution. However it is most likely that after 3 to 6 months you will have some other bad cells.

Hello, my Powerware 3105 beeps 3 times every 30 seconds or so. I think the battery is not working anymore because when I unplug the power source everything connected turns off. Can you confirm bad battery...

Your problem is showing up under the Powerware 9305 (a very large UPS) but your comments are about the 3105. It sounds like your battery is dead. If your UPS is over 3-5 years old, that's most likely the case. The website address to view the user manual is You can contact Eaton directly, too. Eaton bought Powerware about 6 years ago. Here's the contact info. Be sure to have your serial and model numbers ready from the rating label on your UPS.

Doesnt work anymore- when connected no lights appear- do they have replaceable batteries- about 4-5 years old

Yes they do, around the age you are at is the design life of this type of battery pack, check with your dealer or there should be info re service in your manual .

Batteries are always live, and are very dangerous, so unless you know what you are doing do not try this yourself. If you get it wrong you will be buying a new UPS.

Hope this helps

Battery has a limited life. You must leave the UPS plugged-in all the time and the computer plugged into it.

Alarm sounds. I have had this unit more than 3 years so it cold be the battery I reset it and seems that it stop for the meantime. If sounds again is going to be the battery right?

Yes, The batteries on UPS units last about 3 years and then they need to be replaced. Your unit is beeping because it is telling you to replace it. If the battery is not replaced it can damage the UPS unit. A replacement battery only runs about $15-18 so it is worth the price to do it.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

CP685AVR/BF685 Power Contro.

It is likely the battery. These batteries are designed to last 3-6 years in a UPS. The good news is that if it is the battery, it is completely user replaceable and you'll have a Cyber Power unit that works just like new with a new battery. What may have happened is that the battery was weak, and you may have had a slight dip in the AC power. This caused the Cyberpower unit to switch over to the weak battery which couldn't handle the load. The unit then turned off. When you press the "ON" button, the unit will go through a self-test that checks all of the components and the unit will not turn on and be functional unless all of the components come back with a PASS, including the battery. If possible, test the battery with a voltmeter, it should read around 13.5, but not lower than 11.5v DC. However, with the unit over 3 years old, it almost certainly the battery. Here's a link to a replacement battery for the CP685AVR:

Hope this helps.

UPS shuts down when the mains is off.

After 3 years, i would by a new UPS...

The battery will have to be changed if you want to keep the old one.

What i've seen mostly here in south africa. When the battery life has ended they customer opens the ups and takes out the battery and then connects a car battery to the terminals. The then close the ups and let the car battery stand outside the ups.

Hope this info helps...

I have a digital inverter and its not charging the battery now...

Hi! depending on how long you had the UPS the batteries only have a limited life. So lets say you had this UPS for a wile and the batteries are discharged often, the batteries can fail to hold a charge after about three years. If it is likely a year old I would check into the warranty. But three to four years may need replaced and can usually be done by an end user. PS: the inverter may appear not to work at all or just shut down with a bad battery as a safety mechanism. If a new battery or set of batteries does not remedy the problem, then there is a problem with the electronics. If I know the symptom of witch I can help with that as well.
