Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have an 18hp briggs and stratton v twin that starts up great and after about 30 minutes of running it will shut down and not start until it is completely cold. I herd that briggs v twin engines have had a reputation for the coils overheating and failing. Is this true and are there any aftermarket options or solutions to remedy this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi yes magnetron coils can do this

but 1st check that you dont have tight valve clearances
they should be 0.003 thou inlet and 0.005 thou exhaust

if your machine it getting hot and shutting down and you have too wait for it to cool coils maybe going o/circuit

the way to test is to run engine untill this happens and fit in line spark tester between ht lead and plug then try retarting if no spark in the tester window- possible diodes in harness could be faulty

remove blower cover and pull wires that go to each magnetron coil this isolates diodes from coils and retest if still no spark when hot then magnetron coils faulty when hot

your local shop should be able to source magnetron coils either second hand - tested or aftermarket be sure to give them b/s model and type numbers and date code off engine to get correct part

here is web site for parts breakdown-:

just enter model and type numbers and download a manual / parts list

cheers paul

hope it helps

I have a 22 HP briggs engine. Runs great for 15 to 30 minutes and then loses power. Let it sit for 10 mins. and good again for short time. It has a fuel solenute and it works but gets very hot. I mean very...

Are you saying the engine gets hot or the solenoid..if engine ? What oil are you using should be no lighter then SAE 30 for summer vehicles..Sounds more like your oil is breaking down and your Pistons and rings are getting tighter..the motor will start to work hard getting hotter from friction..if solenoid it should be replaced..Hope this helps..good luck

How do you replace a condenser on a 16 hp Briggs and Stratton v-twin model-303777...type 1142-E1. Note:Engine runs fine for approx 30 min(until it heats up) and then shuts off & will not restart until...

The condensor is not the problem for they go bad upon not hold a charge. When the engine heats up and the engines dies out the problem may lay in the magnito's frame mounting from swelling from the heat, a loose mounting bolt(s). Or a Magnito that is ready to go out completely

5 h.p. briggs and stratton outboard motor shuts off

This has puzzled me a few times in the past. It is most likely related to a fuel issue. If you have an external tank, make sure there is no debris or water in the bottom (looks like a big bubble under the gas), next I would check to make sure the fuel lines are not cracked allowing air to enter. This could also be caused by a bad o-ring at the connector on the fuel tank or motor or the connector is not securely connected.

On my 18 HP, if you are facing the engine and the flywheel is on the left, the adjusting screws are all under the air breather. The best way to get at them is to take the breather mechanism off right down to the carb. They are all on the left side of the carb!
