Question about Samsung RS2556 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Samsung refrigerator RS2556SH purchased Oct '05. Problem: Refrigerated side not cooling adequately. I removed vent cover to expose evaporator coil and discovered a few 1/2" tears in tubing, which appear to be blown from inside out. Could this be the cause of a defective compressor in that it is too powerful for unit? Do I have a case against the manufacturer? The compressor is still under warranty.

Hello,
Insufficient cooling is a fridge repair job that you can do without the help of a professional. Often the fridge has a frost-free failure, or the compressor is faulty but there are many other reasons for a fridge not cooling properly. Step 1 – Find the Problem
Your first job is to locate the source of the problem. Consider each of the following:
* Gaskets - Make sure the gaskets/seals are not torn and are sealing properly. * Evaporator fan – Make sure it is working. If it is now working you may have a problem with the fan motor. Check for power to the motor and also examine the fan switches around the door (not all fridges have these switches). * Air damper – Sometimes the air damper will not open up to allow the cold air from the freezer part to blow into the fridge section. * Condenser coils – Check to see that the condenser coils don’t have a dust build-up and that the condenser motor is working. * Compressor – Make sure your compressor is working with on and off clicking noises.
Thanks for using fixya

FREEZER COOLING OK BUT FRIDGE LOW COOLING

Remember that most all refrigerators only have cooling to the freezer... the refrigerator depends on stealing some of that cold to be cool, so here's my top 3 guesses...
Cause 1 The defrost heater is defective, so frost accumulates on the evaporator coils, and the coils will become plugged with frost causing the airflow through the coils to be restricted, and the refrigerator not to cool. Check the evaporator coils to determine if they are frosted over. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, test each component of the defrost system after clearing any restrictions to the cooling fan and defrosting with a hair dryer.
Cause 2
The evaporator fan motor draws cold air over the evaporator coils and circulates it throughout the freezer. If the evaporator fan is not working, the freezer or refrigerator will not cool adequately. To determine if the evaporator fan motor is defective, try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, bench test it for function and use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. If the windings do not have continuity, (very odd) replace the evaporator fan motor.
Cause 3
Damper Control Assembly The air damper control opens and closes to let the proper amount of cold air into the refrigerator compartment. If the damper does not open properly, it won't let enough cold air into the refrigerator. Check the damper control to determine if it is broken or stuck closed or that an inadvertent bump has shut it off to the refrigerator compartment

Freazer and refrigerator No cooling

One answer may be that the coils are covered with dust. You may need to vacuum them. They are usually located underneath. The other problem with this particular model is that sometimes the doors dont close all the way, but they stay very slightly open. You will know that is the case if you get ice buildup under the inside cover.

The bottom of the freezer gets cold , the Fridge gets nothing

The refrigerator compartment is cooled by the cold air from the freezer. This air is blown in through a vent between the freezer and refrigerator compartment by the evaporator coil fan in the freezer. If the vent is blocked or the fan is not working would be the reason that the Bottom is cooling but the refrigerator is not.

To troubleshoot, you must remove the panel that covers the evaporator coil in the freezer. You will need to remove the contents of the lower section of the freezer to get access to the panel near the bottom of the freezer. Once the panel is removed, you should be able to confirm whether the fan is spining. If it does not turn and it is plugged in and the refrigerator is not in defrost mode, then the problem is with the fan motor.

If the fan is spinning but you notice ice buildup on the coil, the problem is with the defrost circuit. Typically the failures are with the defrost timer not functioning or that the defrost heater has failed.

thanks for rating good luck

Hi!!

Make sure drain hose is not clogged up. Check evaporator fan, (small fan in freezer compartment). it should come on after door is open a couple of minutes. Feel air vents in fridge side for a stream of cold air, if none or too weak, remove back cover (where fan is) and check for frozen evaporator coil. If evaporator is frozen, air can't circulate thru unit, keeping fridge side from cooling and freezer side below freezing point.

If this is the case, unplugg unit from power outlet, and use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt ice, make sure all vents are clear.

Once the evaporator coil is free of ice, dry freezer, replace back cover and plug unit back on. Check temp. settings, should be about 1/3 of the dial range. If necessary, make additional adjustments every 24 hrs.

Don't forget to rate this post!! Good Luck!!!

Front left side has small puddle of water. front right side has smaller puddle. samsung rs2556sh. approx. 5 years old.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

My 3 year old bottom frezer samsung fridge stoped defrosting automatically.Ice builds up in vents till stops cooling. After unpluging and defrosting for 24 hrs manually, works good for 2-3mnths.Cant find...

3 things defrost heater, defrost timer or defrost limit thermostat.
You can pull the cover inside the freezer exposing the evaporator coils,
look for the defrost heater at the bottom of the coils. Test for continuity.
Find the defrost limit thermostat, a 2" metal disc attached to the evap coil usually on the side towards the top has two wires going in and will have continuity only when it is cold. If those are good probably the defrost timer.

Drip pan keeps overflowing recently

The heat from the compressor coils should be adequate to evaporate the water.

Are the refrigerator units, freezer and refrigerator, both cooling properly? If there is some problem within the refrigerant-compressor components, the coils would not get as hot as they should. This would mean that the water would not evaporate as quickly as it should.
