First of all check the little trigger inside that checks to make sure the lid is closed. It won't play the disc if it thinks the cover is open. Otherwise, it sounds like the motor that spins it is probably broken and needs to be repaired / replaced.

I'll need some more information to truly help you, Is the disc spinning when you put it in (can you hear it trying to read) What does the xbox dashboard say when a disc is inserted? Are there any error codes or "no disc inserted" message? Try another game disc if you can. Sometimes discs get scratched or dirty, in which case you can clean it or have it professionally cleaned. If that doesn't work, Try cleaning your laser lens There are several places that will clean your laser lens, or if you're a little more technologically inclined, You can open your system yourself and clean the lens with some alcohol and a q-tip. If none of the above works, you may need to have your xbox professionally repaired.
The most likely situation you have here is that the cd drive lens isn't reading, just because with a gamecube, it relies on that lens to detect if there is a disc inserted. Your best bet is to try and clean the lens with a que tip and some rubbing alcohol. Be gentle, only very gentle wipes back and forth in a circular motion, then dry it the same way. If that doesn't work, I can give you some tips on how to rip the thing apart and see if it is a connection inside somewhere
Sounds like your drive is bad. Unplug from power for a min. Plug back in and try a couple different discs. Plug back if still not working the PS3 will need to be taken apart for further inspection. If you are somewhat handy you can do your self. Here is a vid to show how to take apart and replace lens.

I just found a post on this and it worked for me. My warranty is past. So I took matters in my own hands. I took it apart which was fairly simple cleaned the lens and surrounding areas but it didn't work. But this is what I found out its not reading the disk because the disk isn't spinning. With the box apart and drive open I put it back in the system and turned on the power I noticed the drive would spin slowly I then while the disk was trying to load I spun the disk by hand to help it along and wala it started spinning I powered down put it back together and as of 10:45 2night my gaming nightmare is over. I hope this was helpful. Good luck all!!
if you can't send the xbox back to Microsoft this worked for me.
The 360 would spin the game up and say reading but than stop and do nothing.
I took the case apart, took out the cd drive, took that apart so i could get to the laser.
put a little big of very clean water on a q-tip, wipe the laser lens down and use the dry side to dry it off. put it somewhat back together and test, this worked fine for me, it read a disk no problem.
Dont know if this was just me But this fixxed mine, but I think was my Fault.. I was getting "Open tray Error on all games so Took apart Xbox 360 and DVD drive and Cleaned the LOT, everything, even the Lens with a cotten Bud.. After I put it back together the Disk would Not spin at all.. it did before :( I took thr DVD part again and the centre curcle, where the disks sits to spin. I tried rotate as it would spinning a disk and It was hard, well alittle hard for a finger so impossible for a Drive, after spinning it clockwise afew times it got nice and Loose, was spinning very easy. Put the 360 together again and BAM, Spins perfectly and best of all, NO "open tray error" Yay :) hope this helps
please check the model of the optical unit and purchase the new (original) one. Then you can change the optical taking care that mechanical alignment should stay the same as before replacement.
Hope that this will solve your problem.
