Question about Grundfos MQ3-45 1 HP Pressure Booster Pump

1 Answer

I own a succesful irrigation company. installed a MQ345 booster pump in a estate home . The results amazing for both the interior water sources for the home and cabana. The irrigation system is now outstanding. how ever the pump has continued to leak. At first though water may have been coming from threaded sources. With further investigating, water is leaking from the bottom of the pump.coming from what looks like the underside hallow area where u can see the shaft.....Had to remove the pump after only one full day of operation. Is this a defect ? i will go to my supplyer to request a new one .

It sounds as if the mechanical seal is leaking. it could be a defect or was the pump allowed to run dry. The mechanical seal relies on the water to keep it from overheating. You can ruin a seal in a very short time if it runs dry.

Must be a mechanical seal defect. The unit was properly primed with the recomended water amount prior to running the pump . Can storage temp be an issue ? if its at a supplyers warehouse throughout our cold winters with no climate control maybe causing some expanding and contracting ?
Thank for your quick respones .

usuallly climate is not a problem. Rough handling could be. I would try the return. If there would be a problem ask them to evaulate the problem. It is very simple to see if seal is burned up or damaged, but hopefully you have a good supplier and they will exchange no questions asked.

I hooked up a new Polaris 280 pool cleaner to replace my Arneson Navigator and it doesn't move.

I would first take it out of the water and check for proper wheel RPM. If it is less than 28 RPM or you are getting no movement at all, it is going to be a problem with the power source. It is likely going to be that your booster pump is missing, malfunctioning, or is not installed properly on the pool cleaner. There are a few other things to check. Clean the skimmer, filter and pump basket, clearing any debris that restricts water flow. Check the hoses, connections and swivels for leaks. Try removing the blue restrictor disk from the UWF or if an adjustable gate valve is installed on the booster pump or cleaner line, open it completely so water can flow freely.

Sounds like you have an air leak. First check your fittings, next carefully run water over the pump seals (avoid getting water on the motor or you'll hurt yourself and the pump if not worse) the pump will prime if the leaking seal is covered with water. Take your time and be careful and it should only be a matter of a loose fitting or simple seal swap.

it could be the differential in pressure between the cold water from your booster pump and the hot water from your solar water heater . the cold water which feeds your solar heater is probably being reduced in pressure by a pressure reducing valve . so what you need is equal pressure on both your hot and cold water system you could install a pressure reducing valve on the pipe thart feeds your cold taps etc valve set at the same pressure as the one on the solar water heater that would give you a balanced hot and cold water system

Pump spinning but not getting up to speed then shuts off

You have a pressurized system using a pressure tank. This is a case of an air logged pressure tank. Meaning there is more air than water in the pressure tank. The pressure tank must hold 2/3 water and 1/3 air of its total volume. Installed at the tank is the air volume control to take care of this proportion. Should the air volume control malfunction or becomes defective, the air-water ratio is affected. And then,
the pressure tank becomes either air logged or water
logged.
SOLUTION:
1. Shut the power off, and open the discharge line
gate valve to flush the water in the pipe lines.
2. Open the drain plug of the pressure tank to empty
all the water at the pressure tank.
3. Close the drain plug, and put the power on.
4. Start the pump, and set the flow control valve 1/4
open.
5. The pump will normally run.
