Question about Pentair Minimax NT Heater

1 Answer

I have an unusual question about my pool (17000 gal in ground vinyl) that I hope you may have some experience with. Since last fall and through the winter I have had a problem with low PH and it has affected my heater core (Pentair Minimax). When I opened the pool this spring the water was that bright copper oxide blue, and twice since I have been trying to correct the problem the metal flashed and ruined my filter. At the suggestion of my local supply company, I have now plumbed a bypass to get the water out of the heater core and am working to get the PH balanced. The question is what to do with the heater. I am told that because the metal has been etched it will now forever leach copper into the water even if the PH is good. Is this true? The inside of the copper core appears to be clean, smooth, and sound. I have heard that some heater cores are nickel plated, and I spoke to a company that I work with (I sometimes have old hardware replated) about having it done. Replating would cost about $100 while a new core would run $900 and a new heater is $2000. What do you think?

Sounds like replating is the answer provided it holds up to the chemicals

Our pool is about 90000 litres of water so how big filter do we need please

If you have a above ground pool go with the Cartridge or sand, and if underground go sand or D.E. All have their ups and down you should find out what you want from them specifically cause they all do varying amounts of the same thing.

Sand Filters
(Filters using literally sand)
For sand filters, on inground pools, I like to use a 30 inch tank diameter, which is a 4.9 sq. ft. filter surface area, and holds 600 lbs of sand. For small pools (under 20,000 gals), I might advise the next size down (24 inch tank), if the budget is tight. But never go smaller than a this for an inground pool.
Cartridge Filters (like a air filter)
I have a rule of thumb for cartridge pool filters. 100 sq. ft. of filter surface area per 10,000 gals of pool water, as a minimum. I like to see the 400 sq. ft. models on inground pools above 25,000 gals. These can go an entire season without cleaning in most cases.
D.E. Filters (Ground up fossilized algae)
Because they offer the most superior type of filtration, people tend to go small with DE, and buy a 24 or 36 sq. ft. DE filter. Ugh - go Big! Nothing below a 48 sq. ft. filter, and if your pool is over 25,000 gals, go with the Big Boy - the 60 sq. ft. filter.

Also make sure the filter can take the amount of water that the pump is pushing through it.

FC olive green, ph dark pink, alk hunter green on 3 way strips. Water clear but have what looks like dirt on every seam that will not scrub off. What should I do?

First of all, STRIPS!! most unreliable pool equipment ever. Take a small bottle of water to Leslies pool supply and they will read it for free. if its Black dots or blotches it could be blue/green algae its resistant to chlorine and a pain to get rid of. Or if your pool is vinyl over time in high traffic areas or places dirt gets stuck and gets rubbed in could discolor the vinyl. If its algae its basically maintaining propper chemical balance as usual and scrubbing the heck out of it daily with a harder brush type. Harder sythetic brush for vinyl and plastics and steel brush for plaster.

How to fix a hole in a swimming pool liner

  • Get some food coloring...
    • Squeeze bottle works best
    • Or pool leak detection Dye
  • get some good goggles...
  • get in the pool, start at one specific area...
  • and take a deep breath...
  • Now follow all the seams 1st, squeeze some dye in a suspected area and watch. If the dye gets sucked in, there's a leak! If it just puddles and hangs around, keep checking somewhere else.
  • Once a lead IS found, vinyl liner pool patch! Can even be used under water.

Above ground pool leak

Is this an above ground pool or an in ground pool? As a general rule you don't want vinyl to go too long without water. Water helps things stay in place. If the vinyl starts to shrink and bow inward there is a good chance that it will lose its elasticity and split when the pool is being refilled. I would advise you to go ahead and refill the pool. Leaks can be repaired underwater. In the event of a split I'd go back to the installer and pursue a new liner at his expense.

We got a above ground salt water pool an it's turning a little green what would be the best thing to put in it.

The first thing to do is to shock it with vinyl to about 10 ppm. This should start the progress to blue. Follow the Intex instructions to make sure the pool contains the correct amount of salt and stabilizer. The pump, filter and chlorinator should be run continuously until the water has clarified. The chlorine should then be kept between 2 and 4 ppm. One last suggestion, the filter gets plugged more quickly when you have shocked the pool to get rid of algae so make sure you clean the filter to keep the flow up. I hope this helps.

How do you finish the top row of vinyl siding.

I use Dual Undersill Trim
Secures trimmed siding panels under windows and eaves
regardless of the profile or where in the panel face the panel
has been trimmed
.dennis675_4.png
I also would suggest purchasing a Vinyl Siding Snap Lock Punch
is a hand held crimper that puts a crimp into the upper cut edge of a vinyl siding panel. When the panel is inserted into a vinyl sill trim it locks in and won't fall out
dennis675_5.jpgThey cost about 18-24 dollars.

Hope this answers all your questions

If my hayward pool vac (AquaBug) is always connected when the pump is on (4 hrs/day), do I need (will I benefit) from a variable speed or 2-speed motor? Or, will I do fine just by downsizing from 1.5 HP to...

Probably go for the 2 speed, manufacturers often embellish on the hp ratings of pumps, you will definitely see more energy savings from a 2 speed. Just stay away from hayward, easy to work on for service tech's for break alot. Go with Pentair or Jandy they are worth the money.
