Question about Goodman GMS80904BNA Open Flame Mid-Size Heater

1 Answer

I have a Goodman GMS80904BNA Furnace in a renatl home. The previous tenant apparently NEVER changed the fileter as I found it extremely dirty. Now the blower is malfunctioning. While trying to run the air conditioner, the fan cycles off for about a minute then beck on for about two minutes but the compressor never shuts off and the house does not reach the target temperature. However, if I run it without the filter, the fan runs OK. If I remove the door to the blower area, it runs OK. I replaced the control board thinking an electronic component may be heating up and failing but that didn't fix the problem. I cleaned the evaporator coil and that didn't fix the problem. Is this likely the blower motor overheating and stopping or is there a control or relay to the motor other than on the board that could be failing. I am perplexed! Thanks

Hi,
You are very correct in your thinking that the fan motor is going bad... likely it was damaged before you got there...now when it runs underload with less air going over it, it is overheating and causing the overload to cut out...
To make sure I would rig an electric meter on to the motor leads and make sure that the power is not cutting out to the motor. That should not be that hard to do and it will verify the problem...

Goodman gas furnace model number gms80904bna won't light. Changed the flame sensor and the ignitor is bright orange please help

Obvious that the unit isn't getting gas to the ignitor.
To receive gas to the ignitor, there is a gas valve located upstream of the burners.
Have a friend turn on the heat while you are up close to the furnace.
Once the ignitor gets hot, there will be an audible "click" at the gas valve when the low voltage controls call for the gas valve to open to supply gas to the burners.
Listen for it.
If you hear a click, and the furnace still isn't firing, you need to check to see if someone has closed the gas shut off supply valves located on the gas line.
If all the shut off valves are open, you need to verify you have gas pressure in front of the gas regulator.
If you verify have pressure on the upstream side of the regulator, you will need to verify there is also pressure downstream of the regulator.
If there is gas pressure upstream but none downstream, replace the regulator.
If you have pressure downstream of the regulator, and the gas valve clicks, but furnace doesn't light, replace the gas valve.
LP has higher pressure than natural gas, and is dangerous.
LP is heavier than air and will sink to the floor or lowest area.
One static electricity spark is all it takes and an explosion can occur.

What's your problem? goodman furnace lights, burns 10 secs goes out

Hello, sounds like you have a dirty flame sensor. This is a metal rod on the oppositenside of the hot surface ignitor. turn off power to the furnace and remove the flame sensor, then use steel wool and clean the flame sensor and reinstall. Next turn back power to Furnace.

After blackout, furnace won't come back on. Checked breaker

Sometimes a blackout can cause a surge to your unit. You will need a volt meter to test the transformer. But first, look for an auto type fuse, pull it and check it. If it is fine, test for 24 volts at the transformer.

It is right on the front panel for the main overload and the auxualiy is on the blower housing.
If your talking about the motor itself, it does not have one.

Gms80904bna

Since you have 24VAC, put a jumper between “R” and “W”, you should hear a relay click from the control board, this is for the inducer motor, if you don’t have 120VAC at the board, you have a faulty control board, it’s the same scenario if you do NOT hear a click.

Hope this helps

Error code

check out this website for your installation manual. It will describe what the flashing represents and give you ideas what to look for. http://www.dnmech.com/furnace_info_older.html

It could be something simple like a clogged air filter.
