Question about Yamaha RX-V863 Receiver

Open Question

Speaker sound cutting in and out sporatically. I had my home theater professionally installed and about a year afterwards, the speakers started cutting in and out intermittently. Basically, you'll just be watching television or a DVD and the sound will just cut out for a word or two at a time, almost like someone very quickly cut the sound off and then back on. I have re-seated all the wires and looked at everything in the back. When it does it, it is all speakers cut out, so I don't think it is a 1-wire or 1-speaker issue but rather something with the receiver itself.

I JUST EXPERIENCED THE SAME SITUATION HERE IS THE SOULTION YAMAHA SENT ME TO RESET THE SYSTEM HTR-5990 YAMAHA HTR-5990 FACTORY PRESET PROCEDURES All models require the STANDBY/ON button to be turned OFF to start the reset process. NOTE: The remote control cannot be used during the reset procedure. All necessary buttons to complete the reset process are located on the front panel of the receiver. This procedure is not intended to correct intermittent shut-off symptoms or problems MODEL: HTR-5990 (U.S.A. model/s) (BEFORE YOU CONTINUE, PLEASE READ THE ABOVE NOTES!) 1. Before you start this procedure, locate the MASTER ON/OFF button and the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button on the Front Panel of the unit. 2. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR RECEIVER’S MASTER ON/OFF HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. 3. With the Right Hand, press and hold the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button. With the Left Hand, press the MASTER ON/OFF button and HOLD both buttons for no more than “3” SECONDS, AT THE SAME TIME. SP IMP. * 8 MIN. will appear on the display, which indicates you are in the Diagnostics Mode. 4. Rotate the PROGRAM KNOB to the right (ONCE) until the display reads PRESET *CANCEL. 5. Press the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button (ONCE) and the display will change to PRESET RESET. 6. Turn the unit off by pressing the MASTER ON/OFF button. 7. Wait 5 seconds, then turn the unit on by pressing the MASTER ON/OFF button. You have now reset your component to the factory settings. NOTE: Yamaha receivers don’t have to be reset during normal operation. It is not recommended that you reset the receiver unless a setting has been changed that you are not aware of, or the receiver is not operating properly. Your problem is related to HDMI technology not the Receiver. HDMI in it's current version 1.3b has worked out 90% of the current problems being reported by HDMI users. it's a problem with HDCP digital copyright protection and the recording industry not wanting us "consumers" to duplicate or record their DVD's. Your receiver and every other receiver with version 1.1,-1.2, & 1.2a just don't cooperate with BluRay and even HD Cable or HD Sat receivers. If you just purchased this receiver recently, return it and get an 09' model or equivalent with 1.3a or 1.3b HDMI technology. If this unit is "un-returnable" then, what needs to happen is you need to run component video and digital audio to the receiver OR Run your HDMI directly to your TV and run a Digital Coaxial to your DVD audio input on the receiver. Depending on how many sources you are running to the TV via HDMI will be limited to the TV's capability (how many HDMI inputs)

Now, if your TV is 50" or smaller, the difference between running HDMI and Component is unmeasurable to the human eye. So, if you have to run component, don't sweat it! just use good cable, ie. Monster, Phoenix, Translucent etc. I do theese installs every day, and I still prefer Component or DVI if available over HDMI. They just haven't proved the reliability to me yet and we're three years in! Hope this helps

SOURCE: MY YAMAHA RECIEVER KEEPS SHUTTING OFF

The unit is going into protection mode. The message is a generic one and usually means that the output section is drawing too much current and has been shut down. Defective speakers can cause this, but in this case, I suspect that there is a problem in the front end that is allowing DC current to pass to the output circuits. This will cause a problem that will shutdown the system. Yamaha designs are not the most straightforward nad I would not suggest you attempt this repair without prior repair experience. Take this to a service center and request a detailed repair estimate and report the results here. Armed with that info, we canguide you further.

SOURCE: NO sound, display says CHECK SP cable?

Probably the speakers are not wired correctly. Check this by turning on the receiver without speakers connected. If the message is gone, issue was in the connection of speakers. Check that you have not short-wired the + and -.

How to install a 5.1 home theater system


1. Read the installation guidline/connection diagram given with the product.
2. u will get 5 speakers and a subwoofer. speakers are front left & right, rear left & right and center speaker.
3. install the front spearkers both side of the TV at ur ear level.
4. install the centre speaker at the centre above or below the TV at ur ear level.
5. install both the rear speaker at the back side wall corners (min 1.5 feet from ur sitting position) at a hight of 5 feet. face the speakers towards ur sitting position.
6. keep the sub woofer at the right side corner of the room.
7. note that the room should be a closed one with less air ventilession & use a carpet on the floor to get clear sound.
8. use co-excial or optical fibre cable to connect ur home theater system to ur TV, DVD player or audio device.
Now u can enjoy ur home theater.

Dropped speaker now has lots of static


the driver inside needs to replaced as the magnet broke or the driver got bent..it may be cheaper to order a new speaker complete from them.

Lengthen speaker cable


i had same problem. yeah, there's not much wire included. i just purchased a spool of speaker wire and got the length i needed. since the wires are usually color-coded, i tagged each new wire with 2 stick-on-spots, with sticky side back to back over the wire, and wrote RR & LR to make it easier for locating them in a jumble. you can also just splice and tape extra wire on but i feel every cut cuts back on quality of sound.

Sony home theater system started blinking protect


Protect mode will kicking whenever a fault is detected.

Causes that can start protect mode are:

Electrostatic harges on internal circuits.
Leave the unit unplugged for power for one hour or so, this will allow discharge.

Bad speaker wiring.
Check speaker wiring, try unplugging and plugging back, or start after removing one speaker at the time.

Internal fault.
Internal fault is the natural cause for protect mode. If all the above did not work, then the problem is a blown component or an internal fault. In this case the unit must be taken apart , tested and repaired by an experienced person.
If the unit is less than one year old, or if you want to get service, call Sony at the phone number listed on the product documentation.

No home theater sound

Philips Home Theater Speaker Wire (can it be cut?)


Sure you can, Joel.

Put the speakers wherever they will go, and cut the wire from the speaker to whatever length you need to reach your wall terminals. Leave some slack so you can move the speakers if needed. Strip off whatever length of insulation you need to make the terminal connection. Note that the speaker wire will have some kind of polarity marking. There will be a colored stripe or other mark on the insulation, or the conductors themselves may be different colors (usually one wire is copper, and the other tinned so it's silver colored). It doesn't matter which you use for positive as long as you're consistent and use the same one for each speaker.

At the other end where the prewiring comes out for your home-theater system, splice the connector ends you cut off onto the installed wires, following the same polarity. I recommend using an appropriate size insulated **** splice to make the connection. The crimper and splices can be found at auto parts stores, Radio Shack or most hardware stores. It's quick, reliable and makes sure there are no bare wires to short out.

Plug the speakers into the system and you should be good to go. Whip up some popcorn and enjoy the show!

Magnavox would suggest the following as would I
  • Increase the speaker volume
  • Disconnect the headphones
  • Switch on the selected source or select another source
  • Reconnect the speakers
  • Change and play another disc
  • Swap speaker connections
