Question about Black & Decker 19" Electric Lawnhog Mulching Mower with Rear Bag

1 Answer

Toro Lawn mower, 22" push mower

I have owned the above mower for approx 2 years, I use it about once a week during the summer and maybe twice a month during the winner, I have maintained it well, however the other day it started to act up on me.
The problem: It will easely start when it is cold, it will run normally for about 2-3 minutes, then it starts to sound as if it is runnig out of gas/fuel, then it stops, I am able to restart it a couple of times and it does the same but the hotter it gets the shorter the time it stays on until it just will not stay on at all.
What I have done: I empty the gas tank, pour fresh gas in it, it had a small foam filter which I replaced, air filter, spark plug and oil was all replaced, I even changed the blade for a brand new one, all OEM, the mower continues to do the same.
Can anyone help?
Thank you
Fonze

    1. I have the same lawnmower. Mine will start ok, but will not continue to run. It will continue to run if I press and hold the primer bulb on the carburator.

I also have the same problem! I bought it used and filled it with gas/oil and it worked great the 1st time, when I tried to cut the grass the 2nd time I filled it up with premium gas and it started to stall out on me. I tried to adjust the screw above the primer thinking it was running richer but that didn't help, I also got a new plug and that also did not help? I have no idea where the gas filter is? PLEASE HELP

you should never use premium gas because ethanol will eat away at the internal parts of your carb. Always use 85 gas.

  • Chad Jul 09, 2013

Use E85 gas. Premium gas has high levels of ethonal which will deteriate the inside of the carb.

It sounds like the small orifice in the fuel bowl is clogged. This could be from dirt or varnish that collect in the gasoline over the winter if you don't empty the tank and run the mover dry before storing. If you are not mechnically inclinded, take it to a dealer and they will clean out the fuel bowl. Easy 5 minuite job.

You were close. The problem was the gas cap, it was not letting the tank vent and it would cause a vacuum and the gasoline would stop going into the bowl. Overtime gas would slowly seep into the bowl and the mower would run until the bowl would empty.

Hi,
The problem is probably in the button that you pull and push to engaged and disengage the PTO... If you wiggle the button or try to pull it slowly, you may find a spot where it will work. But the button has gone bad and will need to be replaced.
If you are comfortable with wiring, you could jumper the wires and getting it working, but it would be a very temporary and possibly dangerous fix...

I know this may sound too simple, but Toro warranties their mowers for 2 full years to the original owner. Go to www.TORO.com to find your nearest servicing dealer. They should be able to repair your mower at no cost to you.

This sounds like there is possible an internal transmission failure on your mower.

Good luck!

Push rods are not the same length Refer closely to the manual.

Push rod problems can also be due to valve adjustment. When adjusting the valves check to see if the rocker nut has a torx set screw in the center. Read Manual carefully.

Personal notes:

This is a recurring problem for the engine.

Have you been keeping up with regular oil changes? Have seen stuck valves more in B&S engine if owner could not remember the last oil change.
Use the good stuff and change every 30 hours.

Rotate engine by hand after long terms of setting up. imagine setting peacefully after a long winter and some pushes your starter switch and you go from 0 to 3600 RPM, something going to give.

Lastly do a exhaust manifold Temp test after it warms up and running at full speed. is one side hotter than the other. It is also not uncommon for the High speed jet to be clogged causing one to starve and run lean, by product over heat. Try using a fuel inhibitor with some carb cleaner. Also stay away from ethanol fuel if you can, there is a difference.

Hope one of the tips help to solve your problem.
