Look for bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Viewsonic%20VX924/

Capacitors kit: http://lcdalternatives.auctivacommerce.com/Default.aspx

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

I read your article and did as you suggested. I found 2 bulging 1000 mf 10V 105 degree caps on the power supply board. I replaced with 1000 mf 35V 105 degree caps and the monitor works like new. It seems the higher the voltage rating, the larger the physical size of the cap is. Luckily there was enough room on the board for the 35V. These new caps should hold up better than the original ones.

    Thanks again for the advice.

When the DC filter caps no longer filter out high frequency AC, that AC will be fed through out the circuits and cause damages such as the inverter frequency will be running at the wrong frequency and caused overheating.
The service manual does not show the sch of the power supply/inverter board because it is not designed by Viewsonic.

Screen trys to show desktop, but quickly fades to

Hello,

Since the power led button is on, the problem with your monitor is the that the picture board of your monitor has develop fault, that is why it tries to show your desktop and quickly fades away.

The picture board of your monitor is bad and will need to be replaced in other for it to display.

The best thing for you to do is to take your monitor to a local repairer or any service center within your vicinity to help with the replacement of your picture board because the fault is not something you can fix on your own in other not to complicate issues.

Take care.
