Question about Ingersoll Rand 1/2" Super Duty Air Impact Wrench

My ingersoll 231 has plenty of power in forward but acts like it has brakes on or reduced air in reverse i have cleaned it and can find any air interuption anywhere ron

Try a drop of thin oil first but i think the air velve is stuck or broken

Runs untill you try to remove a bolt


I would check my reversal valve and make sure the knob is on the number 5 on both sides first and check my air inlet for trash. Other then that I would tear it down and inspect the tool for any broken parts or grooved front and rear plates in the air motor. If it all looks good I would order a tune up kit with bearings and replace everything that they give you in the kit.

Hi, check back on the side of the transaxle where the brake spring is attached, the is a short lever there held on to the brake assy. this lever and pins will be dry and siezed on. remove the assy and clean and lubricate the pins. Regards Phil.

My 3/4" ingersoll rand impact has little power how do i fix?


A very common problem with most impacts is the incorrect size of the air fittings and air hoses, follow the MFG'S suggestion located in the owner's manual. Most 3/4" impacts need a 1/2" i.d. hose with 1/2" series air couplers. All I.R. impacts have a screen on the inlet bushing that can become clogged with debris and will cause a low power condition, make sure it is clean. If the problem persists disassembly and inspection of the tool will be necessary. Most common problems are damaged / worn motor vanes, bearings, gaskets, seals, scarred endplates. Special note for IR261 the endplates along the edge have small plugs that can deteriorate cause an internal air leak causing low performance.

I HAVE RE BUILT MY IR 231 1/2 IN DRIVE WITH REBUILD KIT 231-TK3 TUNE UP KITS..THEY WORK FINE FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS. NOW I HAVE A BY-PASS PROBLEM. P.S. I USED ALL PARTS IN KITS, I EVEN DID A LIGHT BALL HONE...


never use a hone on a air tool cylinder! use 00004 steel wool! make sure the compression rings are concave facing up! then if the vanes have the cut out on one side put that to the bottom of air motor.

Not enough power


check to see that the tool has 90 psi with trigger pulled, make sure the forward / reverse lever is aligned to hi.

Runs fine in reverse, but will not run full speed


make sure the power /speed controll is set on high in both directions yes it can easily be rebuilt i can do it cheaper than most places, i have 30 years experience at fixing air tools - i worked for snap on tools also check and see that the front housing screws are equally tight.

It turns weakly to loosen, and not very strong to tighten.Have removed the air chuck, and it is not plugged


Check to see that the power regulator dial is set to its highest number. The forward/reverse selector is also the power regulator and can be turned from 0 to usually 5. Look at your impact gun from the side and you should see the numbers next to the forward/reverse knob.

Air Drill Troubleshooting


The feed system should be smooth all the way forward. For cleaning, wipe off the magazine or blow it out with air rather than using an oily lubricant. The lubricant actually attracts dirt and debris.
