Question about Sony SPP A700 Cordless Phone (SPP-A700)

1 Answer

There is no dial tone on my SPP-A700 cordless phone when I press "talk". I just replaced the battery pack, thinking that would solve the problem.I put the handset on "charge" for more than 12 hours to make sure the new battery pack was charged up, but still no dial tone. The handset picks up sounds like a hearing aid would and that's what you hear instead of a dial tone. Any suggestions?

Check the phone cord. It may be loose or not getting a good enough connection. WIth phone on the charger, you can also unplug the power cord, turn on phone, put it back, and plug back in.
If this does not work, you may just need a replacement handset because the circuit may be bad in yours.

No problem with the phone cord or the power cord. When I press talk with the handset off the base, "connecting" appears and, shortly thereafter, the 5 beep thing sounds. This is supposed to indicate that the handset is too far from the base. Right? The handset is only about a foot away from the base, so that isn't the problem. Can the circuit in the handset just go bad over time? It hasn't been dropped or abused in any way.

One thing you can do is try it on another phone jack
Also try switching the channels, there may be interference not allowing it to connect with the base.

The phone is not ringing and it is plug on charge and my wife got new battery for it too. What can i do to get it working? What size of Batteries cani use for this cordless phone

You need the specific battery pack: 5-2814 for the handset. This is a 850 mAh Nickel Metal hydride battery.

When I see a cordless phone that doesn't ring, the first thing I recommend checking is the phone jack and line itself with a second phone. I prefer to use a corded handset with a new phone cord to check for dial tone. If no dial tone at the jack, check for dial tone at the service entry box. If you have no dial tone at the service box, contact your provider. If it's only a problem at the jack, you will need to check your inside wiring.

To check the base, try a new cable (RJ-11) (double check the power as well).

To check the handset, first make sure the handset is fully charged (16 hours) and that the battery is fully installed. Does the handset beep when the Talk button is pressed? Next check that the handset ringer software is on. With the phone off (not in the talk mode), press the Mute/menu OK button. Use the Caller ID/volume (up/down) buttons to get to the Handset setup menu. Press the Mute/Menu OK button to access the menu. Use these buttons to check the Ringer Volume (should be on) and Ringer Tone. Press Mute/Menu OK to save the settings at each sub-menu. Check that the Do Not Disturb function is not on - this toggles with the Do Not Disturb button and should be noted on the handset screen when on.

If you have multiple extensions on the phone line, try unplugging some of them.

I hope this helps.

Replaced battery in handset. Got a dial tone and all was well. Picked up handset later in the day and it was dead. Unplugged and reattached everything - no luck.

Try taking batteries out, but also unplug base station. The aim is to disperse all power in the phone so that it resets itself. I would leave everything unplugged for 24 hours and then reassemble and see if the problem has gone. Its worked for me loads of times with different electrical appliances. Hope that helps.

Any store offering phones will have replacement cables for low prices; replace this first. Your wall jack could also be damaged although the ones used by installers is generally very long-lived.

Dial tone is OK, but can't dial out
• Make sure the tone/pulse setting is programmed
correctly.
TONE/PULSE DIALING
1. Make sure the phone is OFF (not in TALK mode).
2. Use the CID/VOL left (-) or right (+) arrow button to
scroll to 1TONE or 2PULSE, or use the touch tone
pad on the handset to enter the desired setting. For
example, to choose TONE dialing, press the number 1
key. 1TONE is the default setting.
3. Press flash/program to store selection. You will hear a
confirmation tone.

Cordless phones will not connect to base.

I just had the same problem and tried several things with no results. Then, I figured I had tried everything else so I just unplugged the battery pack, set the phone down for 25 minutes and then plugged the pack back in. Phone worked again after that.
