Thats happen to me many times its either 2 ways to fix it...Pull the batteries out for then try it again..or your memory card is making it freeze..its done this so many times to me thats why i keep a few cards around...replace your memory card...then the one you took out format it then youll see it will work again later..

SOURCE: the RCA Lyra 1090a says bad or missing lyrasys

What i do is i never put songs in my internal memory...this way you never have to worry about formating the internal memory....so i have several exteral card i use say one for country or rock and its so easy to format a exteral card just place it in ur card reader if ur using a laptop them go to my computer right click on ur card that youll find then youll notice on the list theres format so its so easy...im sure its asking you to format ur drive because you must have a few corrupted files....best of all when adding music just pull ur external card out place it in a reader fill ur card with music then insert it back in ur device...this way ur getting away with using any firmware....by the way take any disc that came with ur Lyra and chuck it in the garbage that 90 percent of all ur problems

SOURCE: drivers for a lyra rd1090a for windows xp

By rights you shouldnt have to download any drivers....out of the box you plug in ur device and it comes up in My Computer as a drive...just like sliding in a SD card and from there you just add or remove ur music.....Using the software that you get from the net is just looking for trouble. I never did and this is why iv gone 5 years trouble free

Have you tried replacing the firmware? I believe this is the firmware for yours, but you can check the rca support site and may find a newer one. http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Lyra/Lyra-Mp3-Player-RD2760-firmware-207.shtml

to fix it go to the command prompt and format the drive C:\format G:

this does erase everything on your lyra though hope you have your songs backed up...

My RCA Lyra RD1072A just doesnt play songs

The most probable cause that I see happening to people with the same item is the fact that somewhere between uses, the setup files in the device itself gets corrupted. When this happens, you're pretty much screwed. You can't access them because it won't let you, you can't format it because it won't let you, you're left with a dead mp3 player. Sorry, but you need to get a new one. The other one is trash.
