Question about Maytag MER6772 Gemini Electric Kitchen Range

2 Answers

I was wiping out the bottom oven after running self clean. I heard a pop and now every thing takes forever to heat up. It seems like this happened before and there was a quick fix but I can't remember what it was. Any solutions?

Could the one heating element effect everything? The burners, the ovens and the lights all are not working properly.

  • eddieasteris Aug 12, 2010

Sorry heatman101, when I stated "everything" in the original post I meant everything on the range. The only thing presented at the end of the answer was whether or not the answer was helpful. I assumed that meant helpful in getting the problem solved. I didn't realize it was giving you a lower rating. Once I extended more thoroughly on my question you gave the answer that made more sense but now I'm not given the option of it being helpful. So, sorry about that.
I won't be back to this site thanks to the other "volunteer" who is bugged by rookie posts that weren't clear enough for him and feels the need to jump in and insult someone just trying to get some help.

    Hi,

You did not state that initially...you just said that now itwas taking forever to heat....I always rfer to the simple things first....

Now that you have said that and I combine that with your original statement of having just run the self clean feature of your oven... I would look at it totally different and say that you probably have a brunt wire... the insualation slowly degrades from the heat and the break down allowed a wire to short out somewhere...

This could take some time to find, but there will be a black spot and you will know when you find it...it also could have blown some fuses also...

you may now have multupple problems...

Heatman202 hit the nail on the head.

It is good to get all the info at one time, up front ... we volunteers can then fully access the quesion and the problem and provide helpful answers the first time.

It really buggs me when I answer a question with the obvious (the simple) and then get a poor rating because of information the asker withheld.

How do you start the self cleaning oven process on a kenmore stove purchased from Sears in 2009?

  1. Empty the Oven
    • Take everything out of the oven. Remove the racks and clean them with soap and water in the kitchen sink. Look for any loose debris such as foil or charred food and remove that as well.
    Oven Cleaning
    • To operate the self cleaning mode, find the switch on the range marked "Clean." The oven door will lock once the cleaning operation has started. Do not open the door until after the self-cleaning process has completed. It will take between two and three hours.
During the cleaning process, you may see and smell smoke. This is normal because the oven is operating at a higher temperature than when it is cooking. The high temperature is reducing all the organic matter in your oven to ash. You will also sometimes hear popping sounds from the oven that is caused by the expansion of metal under extreme heat. This is normal for a self-cleaning operation.
After the oven has completed the cleaning cycle, allow it to cool for a couple of hours. Once cool, take a damp dish cloth and remove the ash from the bottom of the oven. Wipe down the interior of the oven door and around the seal. Be careful around the seal so you do not damage it. Replace the racks back in your oven, and the cleaning operation is complete.
    Other Considerations
    • Clean your oven at least once every three months. If your oven gets heavy use, consider cleaning it once a month. Always run the self-cleaning cycle when you are home. Because it uses intense heat, it is best to perform this operation later in the evening or early in the morning.

How do I get the door open after self cleaning and what do I push to self cleaning

Hi, Some ovens are self cleaning During the cleaning process, the oven heats up to a temperature of 900 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat cooks off food and spills inside the oven, leaving ash that can easily be wiped out. The oven door locks while it is cleaning to prevent the door from being opened. Self cleaning ovens are better insulated than regular ovens to keep the extreme heat inside.

Instructions

Read the owner's manual that came with your oven before you perform self cleaning. Although all self cleaning ovens work basically the same way, there may be slight variations for some manufacturers and models.

Take out the oven racks. You need to clean the oven racks by hand, and then put them back in when the oven is done cleaning.

Wipe up any spills and messes inside the oven first, using warm water and a mild soap. Ovens smoke more during cleaning when there is food inside. Wash the inside of the oven door as well. Do not scrub the door gaskets, just gently wipe them off. Damaging the gaskets prevents the oven from sealing.

Lock your oven door manually if your model does not lock it automatically when you clean.

Open a window near the oven for ventilation. There is a certain amount of smoke when you clean the oven. The dirtier the oven is, the more smoke is created.

Turn the control on your oven to "clean" and set the timer for 2 to 5 hours depending on how dirty your oven is, and what the manufacturer recommends.

Wait for the cleaning to finish and the oven to cool before opening door. When oven is fully cooled wipe up any ash inside. If your oven is not completely clean, next time set the timer for longer. If your oven is spotless you might want to see if you can get away with a shorter cleaning time.

Tips & Warnings

Because self cleaning ovens are better insulated, they are more energy efficient when used for cooking. However, if you run the self cleaning feature on your oven more than once a month, you offset the savings you realized. With light to moderate use your oven should be able to be cleaned every one to three months.

Save on the electricity used with a self cleaning oven by cleaning the oven right after use at a high temperature. For example, if you set your oven to clean after making French fries at 450 degrees, it takes less energy to get the oven up to the required 900 degrees.

If you have pet birds, take them out of the house before cleaning your oven. Over heated cooking surfaces, oils and fats, can create fumes that are harmful for a bird's delicate respiratory system.

Hope it helped.

I'm trying to clean my Bosch oven, model number HES5052U, and twice now it gets 30 minutes into the self-cleaning cycle and then it shuts down... flashing Error 41. Everything seems to run smoothly until...

Allow the oven to cool before running self-clean. Always wipe out loose soils or heavy spillovers before running self-clean. If oven is badly soiled, set oven for the maximum self-clean time.

Here is the manual with "troubleshooting". Hopefully, it will help!

We also just did self clean, and oven now does not heat.

Don't ever use "self-clean".   Since you did, call a tech, pay for repairs, and get angry because I told you. If you use it again, blame someone else.  "Self-clean" is called 'Self-Destruct' by most Technicians.    Using this feature will destroy circuits and components in any oven.                          --- Clean by scraping stuff off bottom, wipe with damp cloth, and turn on to 450deg. for 30 min.     I have told you what has happened and how to solve the problem- direct your anger elsewhere.                                         Please acknowledge this post.  Thank you for your time- Ed

How long does the oven take for the self-cleaning cycle?

Most self clean cycles take 4 hrs.The oven is gradually heated up to 950 degrees F which takes up to 1 hr and after the 4 hrs is up it takes some time for the oven to cool down before the door will unlatch at below 550 degrees. You can self clean your oven 2-3 times for the price of a can of oven cleaner and without the elbow grease involved. You should not use harsh oven cleaners on the soft porcelain on your oven liner or it could be damaged. Before you put your oven into self clean you should wipe out any excess spillage with a damp soapy cloth and after cleaning you wipe away the ash with a damp cloth. If you do not want the oven racks to take on a blueish to ugly gray tint do not leave them in the oven during the clean cycle.

Yesterday I heard a loud pop from inside the stove. Frigidaire smooth top professional series just about 5 years old. Looked inside and my parchment paper had caught on fire which had never happned before...

Is this an oven or the cook top?

A blown oven element is possible. You may still be able to bake but the oven will seem to take forever to warm up. An easy check would be to crank the heat up full bore and put your hand near the top then the bottom. You should feel more intense heat the nearer you get to a working element.
