I can't get my Sharp AL-840 to print.

I recently bought a refurbished Sharp AL-840 copier/printer. After finally finding and installing the correct driver for my XP, I find now that I can't print from documents or the web. I can, however, copy from an original. I had been emailing someone at protonic.com who said it wasn't a computer or software problem, closed the ticket and suggested I either buy a new parallel cable or a new printer! Since I cannot afford a new printer right now and don't think it's the cable because it's new out of the package, I was wondering if someone here had any other suggestions. Thanks.
