Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

1 Answer

I have a Johnson 30 hp outboard. When I turn on the ignition, the starter motor spins but does not engage the flywheel. I thought it might be low juice in the battery but that was not the issue. Any suggestions? LB

On the starter there is a little gear that will shoot up to the flywheel when it turns. Sometimes this gear can stick and not go up. Then it needs to be pried gently loose and lubricate the shaft that it rides on.

Evinrude motor problems

The stater gear is thrown up by the quick spinning of the starter motor. It is on "ramps" that move it up. They can get corroded or gummed up. It should have a very light or dry lubricant on them.
Also if the motor is worn it may not accelerate with enough "snap"
If the battery is weak or the connections are corroded, you can get the same result. Hope this helps.

Starter relay ground

Usually if the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel, the problem is the flywheel or the bendix drive in the starter. The starter gear is supposed to extend to meet the flywheel when the starter spins.

What a neat little fisher motor. All needle bearing motor so you can run it on 50/1 --would use synthetic for the best operation. Take care of that starter spool- slowly engage the plastic gear to the flywheel before you pull the starter for the start.

Spin Backward? that's not good. Would check the battery connections. If backward- you may have other problems associated with backward battery connections and ignition systems. If it's just an optical illusion- you should try to bridge the starter solenoid with a jumper to the big terminals and see if the starter is really bad or just a low battery. If your battery is down, your charge system on the motor may be giving you trouble.

Your starter when sitting on the bench and directly hit with 12 volts should jump substantially with the torque. If it just spins like a fan motor- it's shot.

If jumping the solenoid makes it work, thats the problem. But clean or replace the cable ends on the bat and solenoid first.

Just a note: you should be able to pull start that motor by wrapping a noted rope round the pulley on top of the flywheel. If you ever get stuck again. Just watch where the knotted end of the rope goes.

The starter will not engage to the flywheel on a 1990 Johnson 25 HP Outboard. The solenoid works but centrifical mechanism does not.

Try spraying some CRC Light lubricant on the spiral where the pinion gear slides up and down. Can you turn the gear so it will move up to the flywheel? If it turns and stays at the bottom, you will need a new pinion gear! Does the starter motor spin?

I have a 50 hp 1975 Johnson outboard. When I turn

There is a switch in the control box that locks out the start unless you are in neutral. Open the box and put in a new switch, this is a safty device to keep it from starting in forward and throwing you out of the boat. Jim OMC retired Mech
