Computer won't start

Actually it does, then goes no further. My daughter was playing on the computer last night. We had a storm, and she didn't get off of the computer before the power went out. The computer started this morning, but goes to the "safe mode or start windows normally" options. The safe mode loads to the same point every time and stops. The windows mode starts with the logo on the screen, but just keeps acting like it's loading with the moving light at the bottom. Loading the last known good start doesn't work either. Is that motherboard or hard-drive or something else? Thinking that it was a HD issue, went to the recovery disk I received, and it stops at the point of looking at the HD. It does see the size of the drive, but goes no further. Motherboard lights are on, .....

The computer is/was running XP. If I understand the reply, you are saying that the HD may be damaged due to trying to access the information on it during the power outage, is that correct? I tried using the recovery disk that I received from the computer company. It loads windows, the drivers, and stops when it starts examining the HD. How long should that take?

This is a complicated fix to diagnose over emails but first, the hd had been hit the power outage while accessing the hd can damage it. so I recommend reloading windows fresh if it cannot then you may have damaged the cd rom /dvd drive.
what version of windows are you running?

It's possible that your computer froze during sleep. First, unplug the power cord, (with the cord removed) press the power button for 10-20 seconds. PS: You will lose any unsaved data prior to sleep mode. Let me know if this doesn't resolve your problem, might be something major.

More than likely your power supply got fried from a power surge during that storm anyway. You'd be surprised at how worthless most surge suppressors are these days.

Unplug it from the AC power.
Reconnect it, turn it on, and see if it returns to "normal".

Computer power won't turn on

First thing to do is try to plug the pc in another wall socket to see if it goes on, If not, the MB could have gotten fried, even though the other plugs seem to work. Hopfully you just need another surge protector as that could have gotten damaged.

No sound on pc

are you using itunes to play your music? There are a number of different volume controls, double click the little speaker icon in the bottom right corner, make sure all the volume levels are at maximum and that the mute box isn't ticked. If you have a media keyboard with volume controls make sure volume is up and again not muted. Failing that double check your speakers are plugged into the correct socket, usually the green one.
