Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

The external hard drive (western digital) is making no noise when turned on and not registering on my computer - the green light is flashing/pulsing - does this mean error of some sort?

I have a seagate that did the same thing and I just restarted my computer with it plugged in. Now do this at your own risk, there is a possibility of data loss. Not a great percentage, but a risk none the less.

I take it that you are using USB 2.0, if so try another port preferably one at the back of the computer. Also check if the drive is present in MyComputer - Properties - Manage - Disk Management. If it, is make sure that it has a drive letter assigned to it.

It whirs for a few seconds, stops, then whirs again for a few sec

The hard-drive is "dying".

Is it still under "warranty"?

When you have the serial-number of the hard-drive inside the external unit, access Western Digital's web-site, and check the Warranty Status.

Note that Western Digital (the maker of the external drive)
has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Enter the serial-number
of the hard-drive on their web-site, and you can purchase a new external hard-drive at a significant discount.

WESTERN DIGITAL 1 TB HARD DRIVE WON'T MOUNT

Hello,

1. Assuming you have tried different cables.
2. Assuming that you are trying different ports (different usb) on your computer or even different computers.
This eleminates your computer and isolates your drive. These are know problems with the WD drives. Sometimes you get a bad drive. It happens. WD offers full support for their drives. Esp. new ones.

This website tells you if the noise you hear is normal. Also, most of these drives are under warrenty for at least a year.

Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise- Help !!!

There is a number of data recovery solutions online. Just google it. I would recommend one that sends out a static sensitive bag for transportation. But the customer service rep you spoke with, is probably right. The actuator arm has probably locked up and is failing to move back and forth reading and writing to the platters. Good luck and i feel for you with it being your new born on the hard drive.

The hard drive has lost its index or master boot record. About the only thing to do is use a data recovery service if there's unrecoverable data, then replace it.
