The most likely suspect would be a bad seat switch or the plug to it has come off.To test it if the plug is still on the seat switch just stick a small piece of wire with then ends bared into each connector to "jump" the seat switch then if you can now let off the brake without it quiting the you know that you need to get one.

Problems with craftsman 18hp ohv

If the engine stalls as you pull away there are two possibilites, either a micro switch is defective ( probably the seat switch, or a poor connection on the block connecter ) or the brake on the side of the gearbox is stuck on ( this is a disc on the side of the gearbox and should be sdjustable )

I have a craftsman 917.287030 and it will not stay running. i put it in gear and it stalls. any ideas??

Check the seat safety switch. For example, start the mower and then engage the blades. If the seat safety switch is faulty, then it will die. Same thing with putting it in gear and releasing the brake.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Tractor starts, stalls when blade is engaged, or brake released

you have a safety switch malfunctioning or a transistorized relay not working properly. Go to www.partsdirect.com, this is sears website. It should be able to find and illustrated parts list for your mower.

Engine stalls when clutch/brake pedal is released

Under the seat, there is a operator presence switch, if this switch fails, the mower will shut off when the brake is released, or put in any gear.

There is a safety switch on the clutch pedal, that's not the problem
