Question about Smith AO Pool Pump Motor

1 Answer

1.5 hp motor just hummed. Removed start cap and pool store only had a used one that they said worked to the best of there knowledge. Installed it and it popped and tripped c/breaker. installed old one and it was quiet for two to three seconds and then popped and tripped the c/breaker. Did I ruin my motor?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

The cap would not ruin the rest of the motor on its own. It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

I had a hayward 11/2 hp 2 sp...I put a AO 2 hp 1 sp on my ing. pool and how it just hums and shuts off. I checked everything out and primed it before I tried to start the pump. Can anyone help

Turn off the power and remove the end cap at the center back end of the motor. The end of the motor shaft is then exposed and you can use a 9/16" open end wrench to verify that the motor shaft is turning freely.
If it offers resistance the pump needs to be opened and checked to find out why. If it does move freely, take it to a pool store or motor shop to test it. Rarely, a motor gets out of the factory DOA.

I have a brand new 1 1/2 hp superflo. I wired it in and turned on the power, it hummed for a few secounds and trip the breaker. now it it wont work and just immediatly trips the breaker. Any ideas as

It sounds like the motor shaft is stuck. The back end of the motor has an end cap that comes off so you can access the end of the motor shaft. Try this with the power off; Remove the cap (center rear of the motor),Using an open ended 9/16 wrench you should be able to turn the shaft back and forth. A motor that has sat for a while will sometimes act like yours did. A nudge with the wrench usually breaks it free. Remove your wrench and turn pump on. If it still won't start the motor may be defective.

Motor hums won't start. I tried to seperate motor from pump, but could not uncouple. Was checking for impellor jam. what next

sounds like you have a bad start capacitor, check that first and make sure the motor spins freely. You may be able to check to see if the motor is seized by removing the end cap and spinning the shaft. If it spins freely, it's a bad start/run capacitor.

I have a 1.25 hp motor for my pool. When I turn on the electric switch, the motor hums but won't turn. I have to take off the end cap and use pliers to get it to start. Does it need to be replaced?

It's most likely the centrifugal start switch malfunctioning. It's stuck or, has burned contacts or, loose spring or, it's broken. It's right on the end of the shaft on the back end of the motor.

Often it just needs the contacts sanded and/or the the moving parts lubricated.

More info, let me know.

My Mustang pool motor by Waterway musts-120 is just humming when it is turned on. It is connected to a timer, but the pump is working fine, just the motor is humming. What do I do? Is my motor toast?

Check your loacl yellow pages for an electric motor repair shop. They may find it is fixable but could at least tell you if it is salvagable or not. Some even carry replacement motors at costs lower than the pool stores.

It is a capacitor problem. Motors use capacitors to start. Your 2 speed motor should have 2 capacitors (or 1 capacitor with more than 2 connections). Changing this capacitor should solve your problem.
