Losing wireless connection when I enable wireless security on 2350

Hey,

When I enable wireless security on my Dell 2350 wireless router, be it WEP or WPA, the "wireless" status light on the router turns off and the wireless connection in the "Device Status" section of the administration web page has a red X on it.

Tried enabling security numerous times, recycling wireless router and modem, restarting PC to no avail.

Thanks for any help.

serra_baby: All machines run Windows XP.

The problem isn't with the connecting clients, it is a problem with the wireless router.

When security is enabled, the wireless facility on the router goes down and Internet connection goes down too.

tech curly: laptops have been tried on other wireless networks and work fine.

The wireless network actually goes down when I enable WEP or WPA.

This is evident by the wireless status light on the router turning off, graphical representation in the web interface and the fact that wireless clients can no longer see the network.

Once I turn off security all is well again...

    Strange..

jedinger: Once machine is connected to the network by wire, the rest are wireless. (With no security!)

    Firmware is up to date.

I'm going to get another wireless router and try that.

    Cheers for all the help.

I replaced the Dell with a Linksys WRT54G.

Set that up with WPA-TKIP no bother.

    Happy days.

Still don't know exactly what was wrong with the Dell. Problem with the router itself I think, bad firmware or something like that.

    Cheers for the help.

-- are you experiencing the problem also on a different wireless computer?

-- if the wireless security on the router is not enabled, is your wireless computer working?

Have you tried your laptop on a different wireless network?

Before you have the device replaced, do a firmware upgrade first. It could be a problem with the firmware of the router.

Hey ! I've got a DELL Wireless 2350 Broadband Router and it's working just fine. Recently I purchased a wireless printer (Samsung ML-1856W). I get the printer to work via the network if I...

My first thought would be to try different forms of encryption on your router. It's possible that your printer may not support the type of encryption you're trying to use which may be causing it to have trouble connecting. For example, if you're using WPA encryption, try switching to a WEP key instead. You can change all of these settings from your Wireless Router's configuration page.

My Dell 2350 router was working fine and was password protected. I must have messed up the settings because now it is no longer password protected (I can tell because the padlock next to it is now gone.)...

Hey!

Looks like someone pressed the reset button on your router which caused it to go back to it's factory settings that's why you lost the password.

Hope this helps! :D

How do I put an encryption on my linksys router?

Securing your wireless network is a simple process, which generally does not require a lot of time. This can be done by:
  • Enabling WEP or WPA on the Router
  • Enabling Wireless MAC filter on the Router
  • Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
NOTE: The wireless security modes available may vary depending on the model of the router and wireless adapter you are using.
Enabling WEP on the Router
Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP) is a type of wirelesssecurity which does not change. It provides comparable confidentialityto a traditional wired network. There are two types of WEP you canchoose from:
a. WEP 64-bit: This type of WEP consists of 10-hexadecimal codes. To enable WEP 64-bit, click here.
b. WEP 128-bit:This type of WEP consists of 26-hexadecimal codes hence it is moresecured compared to WEP 64-bit. To enable WEP 128-bit, click here.
Enabling WPA on the Router
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a type of wireless securitywhich is dynamic in nature. Meaning, it changes depending on the timerenewal you will specify. Hence, WPA is more secured compared to WEP.
  • Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (WPA-TKIP) – utilizes a stronger encryption method and incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers.
  • Advanced Encryption System (WPA-AES) – utilizes a symmetric 128-bit block data encryption
To enable WPA, click here.
Enabling Wireless MAC Filter on the Router
Wireless access can be filtered using the MAC address of thewireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius. You caneither permit or prevent specific wireless computers access to yourwireless network.
To permit wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
To prevent wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
Disabling the SSID broadcast is one way of securing your wirelessnetwork. This procedure will prevent other users from detecting yourSSID, or your wireless network name, when they attempt to viewavailable wireless networks in your area. For instructions, click here.

you have to check if you have the wep key enabled. when you put in the wep key, it should also be enabled so that your wireless network should say security-enabled wireless network. make sure to disconnect and connect again on your network after changing the settings to refresh your connection. hope this helps.

Cannot connect to internet through router

there might be a wireless setting that is not yet set properly on your son's laptop. If there is a wireless security enabled on your dell router, you have to enter that so that the laptop will connect. Also, if you are using Windows xp or vista, you can try to remove the preferred networks first before reconnecting.

If the same problem occurs, you can try changing the channel on your router and make sure that the SSID set is personalized. If this still does not help, you can try bringing your son's laptop to a hotspot to check if it can connect. If it doesn't then the problem is on the wireless adapter of the laptop, you can try to update the drivers for that one.

If you encounter any problems, just click on the ask me button and I'll help you with your concern as soon as I can.
