    yes, I waited for a very long time for the "warming" message to disappear. The scanner seems to be trying to move repeatedly, but cannot. It had been handled considerably in a long distance move, and when I started to hook it up I noticed that the lock on the bottom of the scanner was in the UNLOCK position.

    Lamp is working. Scanning mechanism seems to be advancing 3 or 4 mm, and then bouncing back and forth interminably.

Its is verry possiable the motor on the carriage is jammed or stuck into hold posiation or might have been broken in transport it is really difficult to say from my POV "point of view" What I recommend is seeing if the motor is not just stuck into home position this will take a little surgury on hte unit that most end users are not faired to do so do nto shoot the messenger here. But your going to need to go inside and try to move the carriage to free the motor if the motor does nto seem to move then you might have a burned motor on the carriage,

let me know

Look at the bottom of the scanner and there should be a lock/unlock slider. Unlock it and see what happens.
If it is already unlocked then the drive/stepper motor or belt is bad.

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

BROTHER MFC-8840D "Check Scan Lock" error message

I had the same problem. It means the scanner lamp is in the park position and is stuck. You need to lean the printer away from the sheet feed side and bump it on the side. This may fix it. If it doesn't turn off the power and remove the two screws that hold the scanner lid on. Then remover the other 6 screws located under the lid on the left side while the lid is hanging from lid open sensor cable be carefull not to drop the lid, break the cable or the glass bed. After removing the base screws you can set the lid on the scanner again while you lift the scanner bed exposing the scan lamp mechanism. Push it a few inches in the machine and close the lid. You can do a test by powering the unit on and hold the lid open sensor button located on the bottom left of the lid. The system should initialize and bring the scan lamp back to the proper position. Turn off replace all screws and your done. If it doesn't work the first time push the scanner lamp farther into the scanning area and repeat. Good Luck

Are you talking about the switch to lock the carriage during transport? If so, this should not be on during usage.

Installation

An error occurred when you set the transportation lock to the lock.gif locked position. To clear the error message on the LCD panel, set the transportation lock to the unlock.gif unlocked position, and then turn on the product again or press the fontx1.gif B&W Start or fontx1.gif Color Start button to restart the scanning job.

You can find the transportation lock on the left hand side of scanner when you lift/tilt ADF up. Hope this helps...
