I have just bought 2.5 inch toshiba external hard drive for my lap top and it is not working

you've probably popped it smell the connections for the smell of burning, check the fuse in the plug should be 5Amp,
there easy to blow, if you don't get the USB plugged in the right way first time it sparks & shorts the ports out on the computer & if you've got the hard drive plugged in & switched on before you plug the USB in then it shorts the drive out as well.
take it back to the shop & tell them two replace it.if they won't then open the unit & take out the drive because that will still work & sell it on e-bay or put it in a desktop pc.

Just a single question, I have no problems at the moment. Question: What is 'autoplay' doing or for?

The autoplay function sets a default action everytime you wish to do something with a media file.
So if you put a blank cd in then you can set your cd burning software to launch, or if you plug a memory card or portable hard drive you can set the pc to open the drive,or open your image viewer to view pictures.
If you have not set your autoplay functions, a box will usually just pop up asking what would you like to do

Child has plugged in laptop extension by mistake and now it won`t turn on,is it repairable as 120 photo files are on it

You could try removing the drive from its housing then plug it into a working pc's secondary hard disk slot, it may be just the casings's power supply which burned out. Alternatilvely buy a usb to ide or sata lead and plug the drive into an old pc power supply. then plug into a working pc via usb.

your pc may be struggling memory and processor wise especially if you have under 1GB ram fitted, as other applications will be taking u your ram also.

So instead of burning direct to dvd drive burn the dvd image to your hard drive first,(remember about 1 hour of video takes about 10GB of hard drive space) then burn it to dvd, so as your pc is only doing one task at a time
