Make sure that all leads that attach to your external drive are secure and are not faulty and there is enough room on your drive or add them to a zip file before transfering them
hope this helps

Hi there, my packard bell external is slowing down my pc when I plug it in. Sometimes it doesn't read, if it does, it takes very long, otherwise I just receive an error

It sounds like your connecting an external storage device (Such as a hard-drive) over USB.

The device you purchased has not been formatted-- that is, the file-system isn't prepared, and when its connected your operating system is trying to "figure out" what the heck it is... eventually coming back with "I dunno..format it?"..

The answer is simple-- say YES.. Format the device. OR, open "My computer" and then plug in your device. You'll eventually see a drive letter appear (such as D: or E: or F:...etc-- just not C:). When it appears, right-click on the drive, and click "Format"... select "Quick Format", then "OK"... Wait a few seconds..and poof..your device will show quickly next time you use it, and you'll be able to store data on it.

Tip

Speed up vista !!1

  1. 1. Shut Down Remote Differential Compression
  2. Remote Differential Compression checks the changes of your files over a network to move them with as little bandwidth as possible instead of transferring an entire file that has previously been moved. With in constantly checking for file changes, this service will greatly slow system performance.
    To shut down this service:
  3. Control Panel
  • Change to Classic View
  • Choose Program Features
  • Select Turn Windows Features On And Off
  • Uncheck Remote Differential Compression

    1. 2. Shut Down Windows Search Indexing
    2. Windows Vista search indexing is constantly checking the files on your system to make their information available for quick searching. This is helpful, but can severely slow system performance.
      To shut down constant indexing:
    3. Select Start then Computer
    • Right Click your C: Drive
    • General Tab, Uncheck Index this drive for faster searching
    • On the next dialog box, Choose Include subfolders and files

    1. 3. Add at least a 2GB USB Flash drive to take advantage of Windows Ready Boost
    2. Ready Boost uses a USB flash drive to provide quick access memory for the operating system. The Ready Boost system can greatly improve system speed.
      To set it up:
    3. Plug in a Ready Boost Compatible USB Flash Drive
    • Select Start then Computer
    • Right Click Your USB Drive in My Computer
    • Choose the Ready Boost Tab
    • Click Use this device
    • Choose as much space as you can free up for RAM usage vs. Storage

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

First thing you should check is: is it full? Having an almost full hard drive can slow it down drastically.
You could also try adding files to it from a different USB port as some might not be powerful enough for your hard drive.

Would like to erase 150gb maxtor external drive and start over

    Connect the drive.
    Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the Maxtor.
    Click FORMAT.
    Choose Quick-Format.
When it completes (in a few seconds), all the files on the disk will be "gone",
because a "blank" Table-Of-Contents has replaced the previous Table-Of-Contents.

Please tell me how to retreive files from a broken external hard drive. It spins up, and sometimes a computer will recognize it but not often. Is there a way to jump-start it?

your best bet way true and tested, is to disassemble the "CAGE" take it out it will be a sata hard drive if your computer supports sata continue. Anyways put it in 2 ziplock bags 1 inside another. Freeze it for about 3 days or so in the freezer take it out quickly plug it in and turn on the computer. you will have about 10-15 minutes to get any files you want off of it. before it starts to act up again.

External HDD not recognized after a time of inactivity

you are guessing right... this is caused due to system going in standby suspend mode which powers down the HDD ... and when the system comes back from suspend mode... the win vista thinks no external HDD is attached to the system ... thereby removing it from the devices list.

right click desktop select properties and select screensaver tab and then power options. select turn off the hard disks and select never. this is for winxp .. but it will be similar to this procedure in vista.
