Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I'm having troubles getting my garage door to close. It will go up just fine but when I hit the wall switch when its fully up, I hear a click followed by the 5 flash trouble code. I know this means its either my RPM sensor or motor overload. Here are the steps I've taken: 1. Make sure infrared door safety sensors are aligned. Both the receiver and transmitter have steady green LED lights on. Also made sure there were no obstructions (including spider webs). 2. Make sure trolley is not jammed against stop bolt and limits are correctly adjusted. 3. Visually inspected logic board and found no obvious burns or faulty solders. 4. Thoroughly cleaned the RPM sensor with cotton swab and rubbing alchohol. 5. Let it sit for a day in case of thermal overload. When I hit the garage door button, it doesn't go down at all, not even an inch which is why I don't think its a bad RPM sensor. Could my logic board be faulty? The unit I have is almost 10 years old. Thanks.

First of all I have a question. If you cannot get it to close how do you know it will go up just fine?

All your symptoms and the things you have checked still point to the trolley being jammed against the stop bolt. The fact it will not move even an inch says jammed trolley or the up and down limits are completely misadjusted. Remove the cover from the motor unit and look at the limit switch assembly. Make sure the up and down contacts are not both contacting the center contact.

Lift master formula I will not close, only goes half way down, but fully opens. Worked fine until my wife closed the door on the car, after that it would fully close

I had this problem as well with the door opening just fine but was not closing when using the remotes or when breifly pressing the wall mounted control. The door would close only when using the wired wall mount control. I have experienced this problem with other garage door openers I've had in my previous homes and it was always caused by sensors at the bottom of the door tracks being either misaligned or the lenses were dirty. In this case, and it was just a moment ago today, I simply cleaned the sensor lenses and then the door began to function properly. Give it a try.

If when you try to close the door the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position you have a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and that the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have a bad sensor.

Opener opened fine from the wall and stopped

Check to see if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so, loosen the chain enough to ease the tension on the trolley and run the motor until the door closes. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit and turn it 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

How to switch back to automatic after manually close the garage d

mikey-moore's advice helped me figure out what to do but it's not exactly what I had to do. Manually open the garage door all the way. Then hit the automatic button you normally would use to open and close your garage door. The bracket slides back and locks into place. Hit the automatic button again and the garage door should automatically close.

Liftmaster pro 1/2 hp wont shut in one button press

You have a door sensor problem. Either your main light bulb is burned out or you don't have one in your opener. The clicking sound you hear is the relay for the light. Both of the door sensors should have a small light that is lit. Tweak them until they are.

Craftsman Garage Opener Clicks only and LED blinking 5 times

Just fixed this problem tonight. Had the 5 blink/flash thing. Opened it up and saw that the motor wasn't spinning so it wasn't a bad rpm sensor. Jumped the red to black and then the blue to black to verify motor worked. At that point assumed it was the logic board not telling the motor to start, but I could hear the click of the relay. Pulled the logic board out and noticed a solder joint that had failed directly behind one of the relays. Resoldered that joint and the garage door opener worked again like a dream. Hope that helps someone else.
