Thermostat?
what are you trying to do, replace, reset?
most hardware stores have these, but I would replace both unpper and lower, not just the one.

make sure you set both to the same temp, the heater will work better.

just follow the instructions in the package. make sure you turn off the power before you start.

Hot water heater water is just warm am wandering if its something that i can fix. its a reliance 501 electric heater

did you turn up the thermo stat?? it is right under the top and bottom cover. Turn off the power remove the top and bottom plates remove the insulation ( its just a patch)you then should see the adjustment screw witht eh little pointer. Turn it to the right as far as you chose the more you turn it the hotter it should get.

I would split where it is now to all the way right and give it an hour to see it that is hot enough for you. If not move the pointer the rest of the way.

Now if that does not work I would replace both top and bottom elements. If the heater is 10 yeer old or older I would replace them both now anyway. they are covered with lime.

You will need a heater element to remove it. they do mot cost much you can get all that you need at home depot or lowes or advanced hardware

Thanks Tom

Replaced both elements and tstats now there is 240 at both elements at once and only the top one is heating the bottom is coldreplaced bottom sgain thinking maybe bad from factory but still cold will i...

Electric water heaters never power BOTH the upper and lower elements at the same time.

If the water in the tank is cold, either the top OR bottom element will be powered through the upper thermostat (t-stat), never both at the same time. The upper t-stat will send power to the upper element until the temperature of the water in the top of the tank reaches the set point of the t-stat say 140 degrees. When the water temperature in the top of the tank reaches 140 degrees, the t-stat is "satisfied" and disconnects the power from the top element and sends it to the lower t-stat.

IF the temperature of the water in the lower half of the tank is lower than the set point of the lower t-stat, the t-stat closes to send power to the lower element. The lower element REMAINS powered by the t-stat until EITHER the water in the lower part of the tank reaches the set point temperature of the lower t-stat again, say 140 degrees; OR the temperature of the water in the upper part of the tank drops, at which point the upper t-stat "calls" and switches the power away from the lower t-stat and sends it to the upper heating element instead. When the top t-stat is satisfied, it switches power back to the lower t-stat. The process will continue back and forth for as long as needed to bring the temperature of the water in both halves of the tank to 140 degrees.

You must wait until the top of the tank is heated - before the lower element will be powered to heat the water.

I hope this helps you understand how the switching happens in these water heaters. Good luck! Please rate my reply. Thank you.

I have a rheem fury 50gal gas water heater that will not stay on. I have replaced the thermo couple, it did lite but then went out.

I would like to know how old this heater is. This information can be found on either model or serial numbers. It won't appear obvious but last six numbers will tell you. You have already changed thermo-couple so I would check to see that it's properly centered in pilot flame. When you light it hold pilot button down for two-three mins.while watching thermo-couple.It should be a nice cherry red. If it is and pilot goes out after you release button then you either have another bad thermo-couple or gas valve is bad.If it does not get cherry red at least on tip then you need to reposition thermo-couple and try again. If gas valve is bad and heater is less then six years old valve will be covered under warrenty, however labor won't typically be covered unless you have extened service contract.Hope this helps.Thanks.

Test procedure for elements and thermostat

Remove upper and lower access panels
in upper access, use voltage tester to test voltage of on the uppermost terminals above the red reset button. should be ~220V between terminals (110 to ground)
If not: breaker off or bad,
If 220V proceed:
Test the two terminals immediately below this reset button should be 220V
If not: reset tripped or bad
If 220V present, proceed.
Turn off breaker to heater.

Use ohm meter or continuity tester.
test resistance across upper element terminals -should be 10 to15 ohms
check between each terminal and ground -should be open circuit .
If not replace element
Repeat for lower element.

test across lower element thermostat should be no resistance when stat turned up so it clicks on.
(To test that lower stat turns off, allow tank to heat up completely before conducting this test) Turn sta temp down so it clicks off then test across stat terminals -should be open circuit

The upper thermostat is a 3 way switch
The simplest way to test it is to turn the power back on turn the upper stat all the way up so it clicks on and use voltage tester across the UPPER element terminals, should be ~220V
Now turn the upper stat down so it clicks off- check upper element should be 0 V between upper element terminals -(Caution ! terminals will still be live 110V to ground)
The upper stat has now sent power to lower stat.
Turn lower stat up so it clicks on, check Voltage across lower element -should be ~220V turn lower stat down so clicks off, should be 0 V across lower element terminals.

NOTE If tank is completely cold the upper stat will not switch off and wont send power to lower stat.
If lower tank is cold lower stat may not click off even when turned down.
normal stat setting is 125 to 130
The hotter you you set the stat, the faster your tank corrodes.

No hot water, pilot light lights but no burner ignition

Thermo coupler may be defective. it controls the main gas valve by closing main if pilot is out. make sure thermo coupler bulb is positioned over and near tip of pilot flame, but not in the flame. Thermo couplers are inexpensive and easy to change out.

Have you checked to make sure that the elements are good by checking the ohms. Be sure that the power is off and the wires are disconnected from elements and then also be sure to check the ohms across the tank to make sure there is not a dead short in the element reading through the tank. If both elements are good then I suggest replacing both thermos then they will both be new and should work for you . Thermos can be problematic when trying to test them sometimes they won't always give you correct readings. Make sure you have the breaker off whenever you mess with a waterheater, and make sure you install the thermos correctly with the right wires going where they should.

Hayward C-Spa XI 11 heater non operational

hi not coming from the US but from the UK. have you wired up the elements correctly?
you need to make sure there is power at the elements, you can do this by using a multimeter.

By physically disconnecting the elements & fitting a plug on them & plugging them directly into a power outlet, that way you can definately be sure that the elements are ok, but if you are in the US make sure its all to code?

Check the thermo( I am guessing by this you mean the thermostat?)
You can link this out just to make sure that the thermostat is not at fault. so by doing that you are putting the heater in a permanent demand, if that works then it could be the stat thats giving probs.

So you kinda get where i am coming from process of elimination here? or that if a timer is in an off position?

My hunch sounds as though it could be a pressure switch prob?

if you have wired the elements in right make sure your not getting a back feed & that its not showing you theres power when in esscence there isnt ?

Kindly

Richie
