Common solutions for: Kenmore Trash compactor drawer will not open. Usually, if the latch is broken, you can use a putty knife or screwdriver to release the door catch. ... If the drive chain is defective, the ram will not move all the way to the top of the compactor. As a result, the drawer will be prevented from opening.
Check the upper limit switch, you may only have an issue with the contact arm to sense the rams position. Look there first before buying anything. Good Luck
Look up and down, may have an installation apparatus hooked into the counter top and the floor. Go to manualsonline.com to download owner's manual which should have installation information in it. Hope that helps..
I bought a Kitchen Aid trash compactor the end of Sept/2008. By July/2010 I have spent $528 on having it fixed! It only cost $623 new so I called Whirlpool customer satisfaction line where after waiting 15 minutes was told that "With all due respsect mam, Whirlpool owes you nothing" Then " as a courtesy" they offered me 50% off an $80 part that I still need to pay $60 in labor to install! So,that would be an additional $100 on an appliance that has been trouble from the get go...I have had numerous compactors before this brand and have never had any trouble...Do NOT buy anything made by Whirlpool as they have apparently, a NO customer satisfaction policy.
I have the same problem. It happened once before about 4 years ago just after I bought it. I put a DVD in without the power on. I was able to take it out and it worked fine. This time my daughter put the DVD in, I took it out but still no picture or sound.
I have had this same problem and found two causes. Latch was never the problem.
#1 - Ram not in full up position. To check remove top plate and attempt to run compactor - depressing microswitch when ram is at the top. If compactor will not run you can check the ram position by turning the primary screw drive with a ratchet wrench. When ram is at the top position attempt to open the compactor drawer. The stop microswitch seems to frequently bend out of alignment - check the microswitch positioning before resecuring top plate and adjust if necessary.
#2 - Can (or other debris) is wedged in between ram and drawer. Remove back cover and carefully inspect insides of the unit - use a flashlight. Pry out any debris that may impede the drawer from opening. Attempt to open the compactor drawer.
Here is an assembly drawing of your compactor.. Please note item # 102 ( direction switch) ..That may be affecting the perfomance of your motor or your motor may have a dead spot on the windings.. Here is a link to a website for parts that coincide with this drawing.. There isn't an awful lot to a compactor in terms of hardware so good luck.. Hope this helps..
