Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

Open Question

Hi.I have a Canon Powershot S5 IS.When I turn on the camera, the little display seems not to focus and when I open the big display, there appears a black screen.I restored the factory settings and the big display is working fine, but the little display has the same problems.I think that a firmware update would be perfect, but I didn't find any update on Canon website. What can I do?

SOURCE: Blank black screen for my canon powershot S1 IS digital camera

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

Hy guys. I am having a problem with my Canon S5 IS. Before pressing the trigger button the picture I see on the display looks ok (bright and sharp) but after taking the picture (or even when pressing...

This is a very odd problem. I wonder if you've got the depth of field preview button activated. As you look at the camera from the front there is a button on the left below where the lens meets the body roughly at 7 'o'clock That is usually the the DOF preview button. Try a little fiddle with that.

I own a canon PowerShot S51S. When I open the camera to take a picture , it is blurred. But when I download to my pc or look them after in the camera it's O.K. Any help would be appreciate.. Lise

I'm not totally sure of your question or concern but let me attempt to show some light on what it is I think you are asking. The Canon PowerShot S51S is a huge step up from a pocket point and shooter, this is a very powerful camera with features that would make some Pro camera whimper. So to the problem I think you are having. The camera is fitted with an optical viewfinder but the image you are seeing isn't "Through the lens" in fact it's a digital image of what the camera sees and therefore will not appear clear to your eye. The image will look a little grainy and slightly out of focus. If the in focus indicator is showing your image is focused then take the picture as long as the focus indicator light is on then the picture will be in focus. The problem you are experiencing is compounded if you wear glasses. This is one place where you need technology to rule. I know what you are feeling believe me because I still have problems with a digital viewfinders. Right now I use seven different cameras one of them has the digital viewfinder and it just make me stop and think then rely on the in focus indicator. Hope this was a help but as long as the camera is functioning properly you have no concerns. By the way you have chosen a great camera for creative photography. Happy Holidays from Robert in Canada

Poor picture quality

Some one might have messed up with your camera.
some one might have changed the resolution, aperture, manual focus etc of the camera.
Try setting them according to your needs or try resetting the camera.

Close-up picture

I'm not one to know EVERYTHING about cameras, but I do own a Canon Powershot S5IS & the best advice I can give you is.. to put it on 'auto' and since you'd like to show as much detail as possible.. try using the super macro. ( It's on the bottom left side of the camera) it really makes a BIG difference, you see EVERYTHING, point & shoot!

but you have to be close to it, because if not, it won't focus much
& the picture will be blurry.

hope I helped!

Can't take photographs when flash is on

Hi
The powershot s5 IS does in fact have some strange behaviour issues especially on the first rev firmware. For example if you take 15-20 flash photos consecutively without powering down your camera the flash recycle times will increase to about 15sec, so you'll have to wait about 15sec before you can take another flash photo. The work around is to power down the camera and then turn it back ON. Another strange behaviour is manifested by its inability to lock focus after taking a "no-flash" photo, then popping up the flash and trying to take a flash photo. Again the work-around is to power down the camera, pop-up the flash and then power it back up. Confirmed these behaviours in two other cameras of the same model.

I can't get my Powershot S5 to go into Super Macro mode - Help!

Hi,
There seem to be two stipulations for getting into super macro mode,
First you must be in scn ("A" or "S" mode's only) and "movie", "P", "TV", "AV" or "M" modes only.
Secondly the zoom Lens must be all the way out.. set at the widest angle.

Best of luck
