This could be a power supply fault,check the volts on the red,yellow and earth lead(black)THE RED LEAD =5VOLTS
YELLOW LEAD=12VOLTS.WHITE=-5VOLTS
BLUE=-12VOLTS,PURPLE,=+3.3VOLTS
BROWN=+5VOLTS VSB
BLACK=GROUND.
Diconnect the pc mains plug from the computer.
Disconnect the power supply leads from the motherboard,and switch on and check the volts on all leads of all those I mentioned.If these are present when they are not connected to the main board,then the problem is with the motherborad,most likely the bios chip is faulty.This chip kicks starts the PC into coming on.Failing this send the PC back to where you bought it and let them fix it.
IT COULD ALSO BE THE MAIN ON OFF SWITCH AND THE CABLE ITSELF FAILING.CHECK THIS WITH AN OHM METER ON X1 OF THE RESISTANCE SCALE.DISCONNECT THE MAINS PLUG FIRST.

Try blowing out the vents on the bottom with a powerful compressor, especially the one on the back and make sure the computer is on a solid table and the rubber pads on the bottom are still attached.

My HP a1630n was working fine a few days ago & now it does not even turn on - no fan - no motor, nothing. I tried a different power supply & still nothing. Any clues/suggestions??

Hello,

Try taking out your battery, and then use your power adapter! I just went through this myself.

Your battery may be drained? If your power adapter doesn't work, than you can purchase a universal one, or use the the other you tried. But your battery needs to be out to test this.

My battery was okay, but power adapter was bad...they go bad out of blue for no reason at all! It's fine to use a different power adapter.

Kind regards!

Hello,

If the outlet is good and the cord is good, you may have indeed blown the fuse in the power supply. That is the only fuse. The fuse in the power supply is usually "hard-wired". Not necessarily, but usually. You would need someone familiar with them to replace it if it is blown.

Some computers have a green LED on the back of the computer near the power cord. Do you have one? Is it on? You can also look to see if the small green LED is on on the motherboard.

If you get no indication of power, the power supply is probably gone. A new on is about $25 and pretty simple to replace.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hello
It almost sounds like a mistake at the pc start switch and reboot switch.

Check that you have your pc start wires from the front start button of the case, in the correct spot on the motherboard.

Also remove the memory sticks and reseat them.

The green light on the motherboard is good it means your getting power from the power supply.

The start and reboot switch wiring can be tricky if one plug is in the wrong spot on the motherboard.

you could open up the power supply and look for any fuses that may have blown, the ones ive seen are the glass type and are cheap to replace and easy to find at radio shack just take the blown fuse with you and replace with the exact amps. and make sure that everything is unplugged from the wall and be very cautious around the large cylinders inside the power supply aka "capacitors" they can hold a residual charge and WILL harm you

Standby does not turn off the computer. It reduces power consumption but does not turn the CPU off or the power supply. Because the cpu is still on the cooling fan stays on to cool it. If you want it to turn the fan off or be silent I suggest using hibernate or shutting it down completely.
