My dell inspiron mini 10 won't boot. There is just a flash of white light then a flash of amber light when I press the power button. That's it, nothing else.

Remove the main battery and try again, also! the power adapter charger should be checked for correct voltage, if okay! pull one stick of ram and test, and the second piece not forgetting to put the first one back and power up, if all this fails you will need to get it assessed.

Just had a thunderstorm last night. My Dell Inspiron 700m was connected to a Triplett Power Strip. Other devices connected to the power strip seem to be working. When I put the power supply plug in the...

Normally the AC adaptor gets fried, the fuse inside the plug that goes into the mains normally blows. If you are getting power to the laptop in some form, you should first of all check the adapter.

Plug this into the mains and, with a multimeter set to 20 volts DC place the red probe onto the inner jack pin, and the black probe to the outer part of the jack, see if the voltage reading is 20 volts, give or take a volt. ONLY do this if you have first inspected the charger, check for any burning smell or melting of the case or wires (to be safe).

If the voltage is correct, (remember that dell laptops will only charge with genuine Dell chargers), the charger may be powering the laptop but NOT charging it..If you can, try and obtain another Dell charger to eliminate the charger being at fault.

Now remove the battery, press and hod the power button for 30 seconds and try it on ac power alone, a fried battery will sometimes stop the laptop from booting, if it DOES boot, the battery has been damaged (possibly the battery charge circuit too).

If it does NOT boot, the problem lies on the motherboard. There is, near the charger port on the motherboard a small ceramic fuse of about 3mm length with metal caps. This may look intact but if again, you apply a multimeter set to 10 Ohms across the terminals of the fuse and do not get a reading, the fuse is dead and will need replaced. I normally bridge the fuse connections with a soldered wire of 3 amps but this is NOT a recommended fix long term

If the laptop still does not boot, there is a resistor or possibly a capacitor blown, remove the motherboard fully and check , you will see a blown resistor as it will appear charred and blackened, whilst capacitors tend to burst at the top (usually).

In this case, it is probably not worth the cost of fixing.

If the laptop does boot, but does not charge even with a new charger, look at the motherboard again, near the battery I THINK there is a similar ceramic fuse for the battery charging circuit, check this also

No power at all

A couple of things to check and a couple of questions to help me (or somebody else help you further)

No power. Is this using both battery and mains to power?
Is there an LED light on the ac adaptor and if so is it steady or flashing?

If there is a flashing LED light, it means that the power is not completing the circuit to the laptop
(internal fault with laptop, may be a blown mainboard fuse)

If the charger light is steady, then power is getting to the laptop. Check the security of the DC jack port where it enters the laptop, of wobbly or loose, this will need replacing. Some are soldered onto the board, others are held in place by a clip and connect to the board via a wire, worth checking the wire to motherboard connections as these can fail.

If the jack port is firm and you are getting power to the laptop from the charger, test, with a multimeter set to DV volts (19 volts) by touching the red terminal to the inner of the adaptor jack and the black terminal to the outer of the jack. Low voltage readings indicate the charger is not outputting the right voltage

Remove battery and test using mains alone
Remove mains and test using battery alone

If the battery was known to be charged and will not power up the laptop, the fault is more serious than just a blown fuse. If the steps above fail to solve the problem, you will need to take the laptop to a repair shop for testing of the motherboard.

If this advice did not help PLEASE do not leave any feedback "thumbs".

Hi i have Toshiba a500-15m i used the ctrl -Alt -

Its not in sleep mode. The battery has run out completely. You said the charger is plugged in but does not show at the frond led.... which means something is wrong with the charger. First try a different plug, may be the fuse for that plug is blown or something. If problem persists check if the connection is loose where the adapter meets the wire. I ve marked that section within the red circle.

If the problem continues to persist you might have to buy a new AC adapter for your PC. Before you buy a new one, try using someone else's adapter who owns a Toshiba Laptop. Do not use it for a long time though since it wont be the recommended adpater for your laptop model.

If none of the above help, the laptop's plug in itself must have gone bad. You can get that checked from Best Buy etc. Let me know how it goes.

Gateway M-6862 laptop will not turn on; battery light flashing re

Seems to be a problem of not enough power.

First check the voltage output of the charger(adapter) and match it with its specs.

Also try to reset the hardware using the following steps:

1 Disconnect battery and the charger
2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4 Reconnect battery and charger and try to start by pressing the power button.

Can you remove the battery? If so pop it out and leave it out for a couple of minutes then pop it back in and see what happens.

have the charger tested, the original battery may have been flat, because of charger failure rather than battery failure. try an automotive connector if one is available

A very common problem with dell laptop's are the "batterys" I suggest calling dell and order a new battery for your labtop.

It may be that your psu "power supply unit" may be bad as well.

I hope this solves your problem
