That LaCie unit is nothing more than a regular desktop burner in a external case. As such it only burns, doesn't do anything else so the disks should be readable in any player.
Simple test - put the disk in a pc and open it in My Computer - if you see anything other than a (or more) vob files then it has been badly encoded.. The disk doesn't play in a separate dvd player because the files on the disk are in the wrong format or have been encoded with an unsupported codec. Try to create the dvd disk using another software (or select different options), and you can burn it with whatever burning program and burner you want.
