It is most likely due to the motor capacitor being faulty.
Generally a white plastic or aluminium cased cylinder with 2 connectors on it. Each connector may have a couple of wires in it.

Drive Motor

The dryer drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer stops the motor might be defective. If the dryer stops and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. Also try rotating the drum by hand with the belt off, it should rotate freely. If the drum doesn't turn freely, determine what is causing it to bind. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the drum turns freely and the blower wheel is clear, and yet the dryer still keeps stopping mid-cycle the motor may be defective. it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drum Roller Axle

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If the roller axles are worn out the rollers may not spin freely which can overload the motor and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, remove the belt and spin the drum, it should spin freely. If not, check the rollers and roller shafts.

Drum Roller

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If they are worn out or start binding the motor can get overloaded and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, check to be sure the drum turns freely with the belt removed. If not, check the rollers. Do not lubricate the rollers or roller shaft, lubrication will attract lint and cause the roller bearings to wear out faster. If the rollers don't turn freely, replace them. The roller shaft can often be reused, unless it has worn down. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The front of the dryer drum is supported by small pieces of plastic-like material. As the drum rotates, it slides on these plastic pieces. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, it may be that one or more of these plastic slides or glides has worn out. When they wear out the drum can start binding and put strain on the motor. The motor then shuts down and the dryer stops. Check the glides for wear and replace as needed.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over time this bearing will wear out and may cause several different problems. If the dryer stops during the cycle it may be that this drum bearing has worn out and is putting too much strain on the motor. If the belt is removed and the drum spins freely, the drum bearing is probably not worn out. If the drum bearing is worn out, there may be some grinding or squealing, and the drum will be hard to turn.

Dryness Control Board

The dryness control board shuts off the dryer when the clothes have reached the level of dryness selected by the user. If the dryer stops too early, the dryness control board might be defective. This is not very common and other possibilities should be checked first.

GE dyer DWSR483EG3WW is making a ginding noise on the fron right side (looking at dryer). I have replaced the four slides. It sounds fine for about 3 min, then the noise starts. Could the back bearing...

Hello Donna, it's hard to say without physically seeing it for myself, but I would say that you might need to replace the front bearing. Not just the slides, but the half moon looking piece that you put the slides on. They are easy to replace.
http://www.do-it-yourself-washing-machine-and-dryer-repair-help.com/drum-support-bearing-GE-dryer.html this will help with the front bearing.

You should also check the rear bearing while you're at it. It can cause a bunch of problems as well.
You will be able to tell if it's worn by looking at it. You will however, need to pull the drum forward off of the rear to get to it. You dont have to remove the drum, just prop it up with a piece of wood while you look at the bearing. They are easily replaced as well. I would think that between the two, that should solve your problem. The rear bearing when worn, usually causes a squeeking sound. If the dryer is getting to the point where things are wearing out. It's always a good idea to check the others too.
this should help with the rear bearing....

Also, a parts list with diagrams:

I hope this helps you out. I will be happy to assist you further if you need it. I'm always happy to help. thanks,

no you would just end up buying a new motor they don't sell the bearing for the motor the motor comes as one complete piece so the motor is running then have you check the door switch if the door switch is broken it will not run sorry a lil confused on your situation the beginning of your post says the dryer wont start and the motor hums if the motor is not moving then replace the motor whereas the end of your post says the motor runs and if the motor is running and when you push the start button nothing happens one of the first things you should check is the door switch message me back with any further questions and please remember when our chat has fully concluded to rank how this opinion has helped it allows me to help others in similar situations in the future Thanks Rick

Dryer won't start.. has power sounds like something binding. long buzzing sound when starter depressed. try once or twice and then nothing for a while. come back try again ..long buzzing sound again

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

You did not include a make and model number for your dryer so... this is a GENERIC response. With a make and model number we can better help you.

The long buzzing your hearing is the motor winding trying to start the motor. After 30 - 45 seconds if the motor does not start the thermal overload will cycle and prevent further attempts for around 5 - 6 minutes until the motor winding cools down.

Causes of a dryer motor not starting:
1. Binding.
a. Broken dryer fan blade lodged inside the blower housing
b. Motor start switch failure
c. Motor bearing failure

2. Dryer drum bearing / roller problems
a. The drum can be bound up and dragging on internal components of the dryer
b. The Idler pulley bearing may have failed and it is now a brake.
c. Front or rear drum seals failed / pinched against rear or front of the chassis
d. Drum roller bearing failure and is now a brake.

Reach inside the drum and see if you can turn the drum. If you can not turn it with a little effort, you need to find out where the binding is inside your dryer.

This is the best I can do for the moment without a model number. With a Make and Model number I can provide parts listings and item numbers of where to check.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.
Kelly

Amana electric dryer ALE643RBW drum wont turn and is very dificult to move by hand

it could be the rear drum bearing(if equipped),the rollers that support the drum have dried up and won't turn, bad drum glides(if equipped) or the motors bearings could be tightening up from lack of oil in the bearings, you need to remove the top and front covers to inspect for all these issues

My dryer is making a high pitch squeeling noise like metal on metal and it starts jumping around hard. please help

You need the rear drum bearing replaced, and while tearing down to replace the rear bearing the front bearing surface should be inspected (Its actually a plastic piece with teflon glide bars attached that the front of the drum rides on)..

The roller for the belt tensioner has a bad bearing. replace that item as well as the belt
The start button is stuck to the start position so replace that as well
The top & front panel will need to come off to repair both items

My dryer squeaks when it's on? It's a G E. How do I get inside to look around?

Check Idler pulley and rear drum bearing first. One of those is likely to cause squeaking when it fails. Idler pulley can be checked by removing lower rear panel. It's located right next to Motor.

Rear drum bearing is replaced by raising top and removing front and drum. Often just the bearing sleeve needs replacing unless the support shaft or housing is deformed.

It wont turn over

if you can do repairs, take off the front cover and remove the belt off the motor then try starting it. if the motor spins then the problem is the rear drum bearing or the felt "bearings" on the door. if the motor does not start even with the belt off, the start wining on the motor is burned up. replacing the motor costs around $150.00
