Question about Dell 922 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Trying to install a circa 2004 Dell 922 printer on to my daughter's Toshiba laptop with Vista OS. No go for any of the fixes from other forums or Dell's tech. Any sure fix? Is it worth the drama?

do I save the drivers to the desktop like other suggested or to C drive or what?

  • khenry51 Aug 09, 2010

Uninstallind and re-installing doesn't work. Installed Lexmark drivers...doesn't work. I have the printer showing as installed, set as default printer but get the "the printer can not communicate with the computer" response and that's as far as ot goes.

Took a little doing but I finally got this suggestion to work so thanks I hope this sticks.

I am honestly surprised you still have a 2004 printer running so I am quietly impressed with its quality.

Ok Dell tend to use LEXMARK so maybe if you cross refference to the correct lexmark model you could try drivers from there.

However there is a difference betwen Vista 32bit and 64 bit with drivers so make sure you get the correct ones

It is based on the Lexmark X5270.

With a service record like that for an AiO printer I would put a little more effort into it for sure

The drivers from Lexmark are available here

OK it sounds af if the drivers are fine.

I am going to suggest you change how it is connected to the computer

First off remove as many USB devicers as you can that you will not need for this little test.

Now connect the USB lead from the printer DIRECTLY to the computer and NOT via any hub etc.

Try that and se if you get any changes.

If not then SWAP the lead for anotherone preferably shorter and see if that helps.

Also try it in different USB ports too (may involve a re-boot)

Let me know how you go on as I have seen first hand in this game that not all USB leads are created equal even though they should be ! In fact USB problems are one of my number one issues and often fixed very quickly at no cost most of the time

I have uninstalled the Lexmark drivers. So this time, do I save them to my desktop? Then you said "Now connect the USB lead from the printer DIRECTLY to the computer and NOT via any hub etc". Sory but this needs to be at first grade level. What does that mean?

    Right

The power to your printer needs to be plugged in to the wall outlet and switched ON so that your printer is powered up.

Now follow the cable that goes to the computer and make sure it goes DIRECTLY to the computer and not via anything else. If it goes to a small device that allows you to plug lots of USB things in then disconnect it from there and plug it DIRECTLY into the computer even if you hav to disconnect somthing else to do that (apart from keyboard & mouse)

Also if you have anything else that is connecting to the USB ports on your computer apart from a keyboard and mouse then DISCONNECT those too for the moment

Hi. I've checked at Dell's website and the only available driver is forn Windows XP and Windows 2000. Probably the one that your are trying to isntall is for Windows Xp. I ahve provided you a link where to download Vista driver. Available format is 32bit and 64bit version of Vista. Please click here.

Have a good one!

Disconnect device, uninstall its drivers, reboot, reinstall drivers, reboot, reconnect device and allow windows to detect the device, load its drivers and tell you that new HW is installed and ready for use.

My dell 922 aio was functioning properly when I had windows XP, now that I have Vista, only the printer portion will work and not the scanner or fax. Do I need updated drivers?

Yes,

Here is the web page to download:

Dell 922 Vista

I would Save the files to your computer and install them from there and not Run them from the download page.

Thanks for using Fixya.

NOTE: Uninstall the previous software before installing the new driver.

Printer (922) won't install on new laptop

If your laptop is running Vista and your old desktop was running XP and the disk you got with your printer had drivers that worked with XP and Vista is not listed on them, it would be a case of incompatibility. You would need to go to the Dell website to download updated drivers for Vista if they are not of the standard Vista driver package. (The driver model changed between XP and Vista making XP drivers incompatible with Vista.)
