Question about Computers & Internet

Symbol P460 Scanners need ROM flash: I bought used P460 scanners from a liquidator on eBay. They need to be flashed with the original factory firmware to restore complete functionality. Setting Default App through the System Menu does not restore complete functionality. These scanners must have had custom apps on them that disabled some things. Anybody know how I can restore original factory ROMs? Do I need to download ROMs somewhere? If so, where? And how do I use the ROMs once I have them? I don't know exactly how to do all this, so please be as specific as possible. Thanks much.

Thanks for the info Steve. I have looked on the Motorola Support page and been reading the Product Reference Guides as well. Unfortunately, there isn't any information in either of these resources that allows me to install the original factory firmware on these Symbol P460 barcode scanners.

I'm guessing that they need to be flashed with the original ROMs. Right now they can scan any barcodes EXCEPT for the Setup barcodes in the Product Reference Guide. This is presumably because the prior owners of the scanners did not want someone changing their application. Also, after batch scanning, the scanners cannot upload their data to the host PC (Excel, notepad, etc.). Presumably this has also been disabled. Hence the need to return to the original factory firmware.

Thanks for your reply Jay. I was unable to find any firmware at all for the Symbol P460 on Motorola's site. There is a 123Scan application but that is unusable by these scanners currently as 123Scan requires you to be able to scan the P460 Setup barcodes. The Setup barcodes are currently not scannable until I can get the original factory firmware flashed back onto these scanners. Please advise if you know of a specific location on Motorola's site that has firmware and instructions for flashing these P460s. Thanks much.

According to motorola once these guys where Jailborken so to speak whats done is done!

Now there is a scanner configuration utility

This should allow the scanner to be reconfigured, Part of why this ebay seller was selling these is what your looking for. Most companys write there own apps and firmware for these scanners and once they been flashed or firmwared there is no going back this is according to the manufacture of this device witch was made in 2004.

Now if your company has a set of nice programmers you can rewire a update. But in saying rewirte a update that is out of my scope of expertise. But trying to redownload a rom file and reset this back to orginal will fail and since motorola doesn ot put this file out to attempt it it will be hard for anyone to get.

I sure hope the seller was not loading you with the idea that you can reflash these, let me know

Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

Thanks for the help Rulds. Unfortunately, I can't get that 123Scan configuration utility to work since it requires the scanning of a "Load 123Scan app" barcode. No configuration barcodes from Motorola are scannable. This is one of the problems actually. I'm guessing I just need to send them back to Motorola to have them re-install original factory firmware. That's what Motorola Tech Support said. I was just trying to come up with a faster solution on this site because I'm trying to avoid the turnaround time cost of getting these fixed. Thanks much.

hi tim did you read this bit? it may be of interest to follows

The Phaser P470/P370 RF scanner is shipped from the factory with a pre-installed default
application. This fully functional application allows the scanner to be used “out of the box”.
If you need to load your own application into the scanner, the “Automatic Project Download”
    feature will simplify the process.
When the default application is running, and the scanner is placed into its paired cradle, the
scanner will query the MCL-Link host for data in a file named “PHASER.CFG”. The scanner
will use the information in this file to find the project directory which the user wishes to have
loaded into the scanner, and will then execute the PROJECT.CMD” script which exists in
the directory. This script will automatically download all program and data files relevant to
the project to the scanner and will reset the scanner making it ready to run the user’s
In order to utilize this mechanism, the user needs only generate the PHASER.CFG file and
place it in the directory specified in the MCL-Link setup screen as the “General path for data
files”. Any text editor may be used to create this file; the contents of the file are as follows:
The X| at the beginning of the line are required for the MCL-Net CR command to recognize
this file and read the data. The path name should include the entire path hierarchy. Also, all
backslashes (\) in the path name should be replaced with the string “\5C”, so that the MCL
code running on the scanner does not inadvertently convert part of the path name to the
    equivalent Hex Character.
An example PHASER.CFG file is shown below:

    is this any use?

  • timstark_mau Aug 07, 2010

Hi Steve, this is good info. Thanks for that.

But it seems I don't actually have an "MCL-Link host" and I don't have a "PHASER.CFG" file on my PC. If it is on the scanner, I don't know how to locate it. I have done no software installs on the PC and communication with the host of any sort seems to have been disabled. I see "SCAN: ^----------------------------------" when I start up the guns with * and I can then scan most any barcodes, except for P460 Setup barcodes. But 1, which attempts to upload files to the host always fails and give an option to "Retry" which also fails repeatedly.

The synapse and USB cables are all new connecting to the host are all new and I have 4 P460s I bought from the liquidator which are all exhibiting the exact same lack of cooperation with regard to uploads. The 123scan utility is also of no use at the moment because it requires the scanning of a Setup barcode to travel down that path. This is rather like being in a canoe without a paddle. lol.

yer it seems that way lol, i think what this is telling you is that, the file that is required for the upload and change of software is not located on your pc, i think that you have to make a file, with your information in it for it to upload from the specific location, say, like downloading a file to your hard drive and pointing it in the direction you want it to go, example, C:\mydocuments\downloads, that sort of thing, but as it explains these have to be in a certain format or file format for it to actually gain the information, what it seems to me you need is not to actually flash it back to factory settings by default ( as really there isn't a default as such, Factory is what they are requested to come out of set up ) but to actually flash it to the settings that you need, if you see what i mean, the file specific is installed on your system for this will be the same extension as it says on the other bit i added for you...phewww lol, sorry i couldn't be much more help to you, but it looks like you may have to install to the scanner a file specific for your needs? maybe?

How to clear all my frequencies from my portable scanner

To clear all information that you've programmed into the scanner you can perform a RESET to original factory settings:

1. Turn off the scanner.
2. While holding down the 2 and 9 keys, turn on the
scanner. CLEAR flashes for about 5 seconds as
the scanner clears its memory.
Note: Do not turn off the scanner again until CLEAR
stops flashing. Otherwise, the scanner might not clear its memory properly.
