Question about Craftsman 42" Briggs Stratton 20 hp Gas Powered Riding Lawn Tractor
If the battery and cables are good, then it's likely either the solenoid or starter motor is failing; doesn't matter which because you generally replace them together as an assembly. But before you shell out $80-$100 for a new starter, be sure you've checked not just the connections at the battery end, but also the other end of the heavy cables going to the battery. The heavy red cable goes from battery to solenoid - make sure the nut is tight that holds the cable onto the solenoid. Be sure to disconnect the battery negative lead before you put a wrench on that solenoid terminal - shorting it to the chassis would cause a disaster. Also check the heavy black cable that goes from battery negative to the chassis - it is common for rust to occur at the chassis connection. If so, just take off the cable lug, clean the chassis and lug surfaces with a wire brush or sandpaper, and retighten the bolt. Good luck!

it maybe that the battery is getting old or is not the right rating if the AH Start rate is too low it will not have enough power to turn the starter motor. ensure the battery you use has enough Starting Amps rated. if this is not the issue have the starter motor checked out.
I hope this was useful.
