Question about Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine

3 Answers

Hi, I have had a Gaggia classic for about 10 years and finally bit the dust. Just received my new classic and set it up but no water will come out of filter head??????? Can get water flow out of steam jet but when I close that off nothing comes out of filter head. Any ideas?? I am thinking, piece of packaging in pipework?? Also with steam switch off and brew switch off if I open steam valve I get a good flow of steam?? Surely this should not happen with steam switch of?? Any input appreciated.

I do not feel descaling is relevant as machine is brand new. 'Expert' says 'when I have top off I will see hex bolt'. Does he mean that I should dismantle brew head? Returning machine to Italy from here in Spain is an absolute last resort. Any other suggestions? Cheers.

It seems that the english language is suffering here. What part of 'BRAND NEW MACHINE' do the previous 'experts' not understand? It means NEW, UNUSED, NEVER HAD WATER OR COFFEE IN IT BEFORE. I do not know how to make it any clearer! I do not want to send the machine back to Italy from Spain if there is any other option.

This guy actually read my query and had some real knowledge of the workings of the machine. Comments from other 'experts' either were either irrelevant or inane.

First you should try to clean the group shower which it can be ansrew by one cetrer screw and second if you are able you can open the machine and remove to clean also the coffee group solenoid valve. Both the valve and shower can be full of dry coffee that can blocked the way of water coming to the group head so to grounded coffee and so out from filter.
If you manage to clean everything above and the machine work ok so from now on in order to avoid the problem again try to flush water from the group many times without any coffee. With this is like you wash the group shower and valve from any remai coffee

You description was a little mixed up. You have mention 10 years old but what i can understand this your new the same as the old.

So the most posible is that the coffee solenoid valve is stuck. Their is a posibility that the magnet part is faulty and this is posible with brand new machines.

The second posibility is that the internal part with spring is stuck and need to be desasemble brush it with a wire brush and put back together. This can also hapent with new machines that stay for a wile at the shelfs.

When you push the brew switch you should hear the sound of the solenoid valve open.

    Hi espressonist.
Finally some sense, thank you. I have just replaced my 10 year old Gaggia Classic with a new Gaggia Classic. I have taken the top off the new machine and discovered one of the wires to the solenoid was not attached! Also the Earth wire was not attached to the mains lead so the machine was potentially dangerous. Also the spring clip which holds the pump in place was not located so the pump had become dislodged. Not very good on a new machine!
I have reassembled the machine and it now works!
My only concern now is that when I run water through the brewing head and then switch off the brew switch I get a puff of steam. I never had this in the old machine. It seems to me that the heater is overheating. Any ideas?

From where do you get the puff of steam since you should hear a puff when you switch of the brew valve since this the pressure evacuate from third side of the coffee valve and this normal. If you didint hear it on your previus machine it was because the valve was dirty and old and release of presuure were not so free .

OK, thanks for that. I will run the machine for a while and see if all goes well.

For some reason the water is going through the bypass either there is too much pressure because of a blockage, or the bypass valve is damaged. Please get it serviced.

Please get it serviced? This is your 'expert' advice for a new machine?

Hi

It is probably some scale in the head. When you have the top off, you will see a large hex bolt near the top of the group/head. Some de-scaling solution and run it through the machine. If you've never de-scaled before.
But since the machine is new and hope it is under warranty...it is suggested to contact the dealer to check the unit.

However please check the bellow link to follow the article….

I have a Gaggia classic and want to use pods. I've got Illy ese pods and the right (one hole pressurised basket) but still get just brown water. Can anyone help please?

I HAVE BEEN USING THE GAGGIA CLASSIC FOR 34 YEARS AND I ALWAYS BELIEVED THIS MACHINE IS BEING DESIGNED FOR SPECIFIC COFFEE QUALITY. THE ILLY ESE PODS ARE NOT FOR THIS MACHINE, TRY LAVAZZA PODS INSTEAD THAT IS SHAPED PERFECTLY WITH GAGGIA FILTER HOLDER FOR PODS.

Gagging espresso maker does not pump water

Hi There,
It's either the pump or the solenoid.

When you turn of the coffee switch after there should be a discharge into the water tank - if this happens - the solenoid is blocked but the pump is not.
It is an easy fix.
( This happens when the machine has not been descaled and the solenoid is blocked.)Usually its not the pump.!

Low flow, pump starts normal and within a few second becomes quiete

Hi There,
Try descaling - sounds like the the solenoid is blocked with lime - don't use vinegar! Try that 1st.
If machine is more that 2 years - not regularly descaled or no water filter replaced regularly, it probably the solenoid.
It the machines is 4 years + replacing both would be a good idea. Gaggia classic solenoid Vibration pump Gaggia Rancillio

Hi I have gaggia classic cofe machine. It is used once in a week. Two weeks ago my gaggia stop pump woter in to coffe mug. Just like its not strong to pump water thru all the system. Never have this...

Remove the screw and shower screen, make sure screen is clean and you can see through all the holes in it, if not set screen on the stove (open flame) to burn out the coffee oils in the filter. The coffee will burn before the screen gets any damage. When done you should have a new screen reassemble and test.

Hi, my 4 year old gaggia classic coffee machine's steamer no longer works. The coffee bit still works fine, but when i twist the knob to let the steam through, nothing happens. Can this be fixed easily?

It could be that the nozzle is blocked, and or the steam valve is blocked. Try descaling machine, if that does not help then you might have to remove steam valve to make sure it is not blocked.

Hi. My Gaggia Classic doesn't prime. The pump makes a noise, the boiler gets hot but no water is sucked up out of the reservoir - please help!

I have a Gaggia Espresso maker and to prime it I have to remove the reservoir and use a tall glass next to the machine so that the hose is almost flat. It seems to **** the water up easier that way. Good luck.

Remove the screw and shower in the head, check shower for blockage, if it is covered with coffee, hold over an open flame to burn out coffee (easiest way to clean it). If it is clean and you can see through all holes then turn machine on and press brew button, if not water flow, then remove 2 allen wrench screws and check spring and valve(remove carefully) then try the brew button, if no water then blockage is on the inside of the machine use the pic below to clear it will be on the top of the head.
