if there are rca ports on the front of the vcr which are output, connect those to the tv input 3, the input to input connection is definitely not going to work...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, pls set the Samsung LCD TV to the Source selection as if watching a playback evgen if you are going to do a recording.
If that does not work, pls postback manner of connection (cabling) from Cox digital cable system to Philips DVD/VCR to Samsung LCD TV LN-T3253HX/XAA .
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: VCR to TV
I figured out my solution.
I had to disconnect my HDMI connection, and use the component setup for receiving the HD signal from the cable box. Upon using this connection, I am now able to record a channel even when the TV is off.
