Check fan capacitor
most times this is a bad fan motor.

With engine running a/c compressor engages with the a/c unit off.next day when i turn a/c on the compressor does not engage.if i ground the relay it works, but when i turn the a/c off in the car the...


HI,
The airconditioner turns on the auxillary fan when the compressor is on via a relay. I would change the relay. If hard wired the fan to the compressor I would think the fuse has blown since there is too much of a load on one circuit. Check to A/C fuse. If the fuse is no good replace it.If it is not the fuse, check the fuse under the HOOD..

Car runs hot when idling


Make sure the electric cooling fan(s) for the radiator are working.
TEST- anytime the air conditioning compressor kicks in, so should the cooling fans. Locate the a/c compressor on the engine, it's belt driven. Start the car and with the engine running observe the face of the belt pully on the compressor while an assistant turns on the a/c in the car (defrost feature on your heater control will also cycle on the compressor). You'll be looking to see that the front of the compressor pully starts spinning when the a/c or defrost is engaged. When that pully starts spinning the radiator fans are supposed turn on at the same time. If you see the compressor engage but the fan doesn't you have a blown cooing fan fuse, bad fan motor or a bad fan motor relay. If there is something wrong that your compressor isn't engaging in a/c or defrost and the fuses are ok, you're going to have to check the fan motor and relay by different means. You can disconnect the wiring plug to the fan motor. This is where you see if you can spin the fan blades by hand. It should spin very easily. If it is hard to spin or is siezed up, you found the problem. If the blades spin easily- direct jump current to the fan motor off the battery. If the fan doesn't work, replace it. If the fan works, check the relay. Locate the fan relay and look for another relay in the panel that is EXACTLY like it. WE WANT- another relay that is exactly the same BUT NOT critical for engine or a/c operation. We also want to know that whatever feature this candidate relay supplies power to is verified as functional. Swap the relays. If the fan still doesn't engage, check the function that you borrowed the relay from and verify THAT works with your original a/c relay in it. If you lost that function, try the proceedure with a 3rd relay if possible. Again check and recheck functions you borrowed the relay from. If you still get nothing, put the relays back to original placement. If you still are getting nothing from the fan and the other 2 functions, then the panel is toasting relays and you need either run the problem down or get the car into a professional. Now- if the fan won't engage but the other functions that you borrowed relay(s) from are still operational, we're going to give the relays a passing grade and it would seem you've got an electrical issue that, again, you need to run down or defer your efforts to a professional. Good luck on your endeavor.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. AC problem. Fan and inside controls have power but compressor clutch not engaging. I am thinking that there may be a relay that is out. Any suggestions for troubleshooting...


The compressor clutch won't engage unless there is freon in the system. Connecting a gauge to the low pressure port should tell you if there is. Pressure in a system that isn't running varies with the outside temperature.

2000 dodge carravan cooling fans will not come on unless you hot wire them.Has had a new relay installed,all fuses are good.


Hi Columbia,
If the fan operates with a hot wire and you've replaced the relay, try the sensor.
  • On your vehicle there will be three sensors for the cooling system. All will be fitted either into the cylinder head or close to the thermostat housing.
  1. Takes signal to the gage on the dash instrument cluster and is a single cable.
  2. Will be the cable that control's fan operation (This is the one you want)
  3. Is a double cable and takes signal to the management system
To test which of the single cables is which, when grounded the heat gage will go full hot on the instrument panel.The other should engage the fan....Unless the relay is a normally open, in which case the fan will run as soon as you disconnect.
Once this test has been confirmed, loosen the sensor and replace it.
Remember to top up with the required coolant before start up.
Leave the engine idling to gain fan operating temperature and check that it engages.

A/c compressor won't engage and the cooling fan not operating


I have the same car. The cooling fan activates at 227F. Only one fan will engage at this temp, the other one[closer to the A/C compressor] won't engage unless the A/C is working. Try charging the system with half a can of refrig. It'll be tough retrofitting to R-134A, the LOW PRESSURE connector is under the air box pointing sideways about an inch from a large bracket. Try and find a 90 degree adapter of some type and go from there.

is it overheating?if not no worries fan has atemp sensor and will come on when getting hot, try new sensor if car is overheating hope this helps

Overheats on hwy. Radiator fan does not engage after overheating


fan does not generally come on till you reach about 210f. second fay comes on when ac compressor is on. Allowing for gauge inaccuracy this does not sound like a problem. Have you checked for coolant loss inside or outside the engine? If coolant is low, it may not be reaching the sensor unless you make pump run faster. Those engines are known for head and intake gasket problems, which may be the underlying cause of what you described. A partilally obstructed radiator can give some of the symptoms but I don't thind that is it.
