Question about Minn Kota Edge 40 Freshwater Bow Mount Trolling Motor

Minn Kota turbo pro 712 bow mount. Foot control Speed control stuck at one speed, On/off switch sometimes doesn't work. Foot controller has been replaced with no change in the problem. Where is the problem? In the motor controller? is the motor controller attached to the motor?

The first reply was not helpful. First of all I said I replaced the foot control and it didn't correct the problem. I also tried a third foot control from a friend that has a working unit. The referral to the other thread was a waste of time. Second, the other suggestions were right out of the manual and have been tried. The third suggestion, which was basically "go ask someont that knows" was what I thought this website was for. It is probably the control board, but as far as I can tell there are no parts available for this old unit. Does anyone know if there is a board that can be substituted. A controller for an electric motor isn't rocket science. One of the other Minn Kota control boards will probably work and the bow mount has not changed that much so it would probably fit.

Maybe you didn't read the thread, but I have first replaced the foot control with no change to the problem. Then tried a third foot controller that was working fine on another unit. The problem remained. Do you still think it is the foot controller?

The motor controller likely either has a wiring short or the controller board has a fault board. The control is the electronical part attached to the motor. It directs all controls.

Hello there:
These foot controle units are notorious for the switches failing What you will need to do is to remove the unit and inspect all of the switches and wiring associated with it expecially the on/ off switch normally what happens on them is that dirt and moisture gets into the contacts and either shorts them out or makes them stick you can sometimes clean them out and they will work fine WD-40 works great on these applications
once the part has been cleaned out But if the part has not been fixed it will have to be replaced autozone or a parts plus or a orilys has these switches OK?
Hope this is very helpful for you
Best regards MIchael

This sounds like the adjustment to the cable has loosened. Here is a very similar problem and solution previously answered on FixYa, and it sounds like this might be your problem:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t2336892-adjust_foot_tension_minn_kota_edge
It could also be a problem with the PWM speed controller. Here is some information about that from fishingandboats.com:
WHAT IS PWM SPEED CONTROL?

The Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) system uses transistors that are rapidly switched on and off, or pulsed. The Motorguide DuraAmp and the Minn Kota Maximiser switches on and off at around 20,000 – 30,000 times per second. The transistor switch on/off times are controlled and the current flow level is dependent on the ratio between the On and Off periods. The larger the ratio, the more current that will flow. The lower the ratio, the less current that will flow. This variable on/off ratio gives a square wave. The PWM is a much more efficient system than dropping resistors or coils. The pulses reach full voltage and produce greater motor torque. The only disadvantage is the generation of electrical interference. As all trolling-motors at switch on with load they can take quite large currents, the Maximizer has a soft start feature which ramps or limits the trolling-motor speed at start up so it is smooth. This helps extend trolling-motor life.

WHAT ABOUT TROLLING-MOTORS MAINTENANCE?

Keep the tolling-motor clean and dry when not in use. Where used in saltwater estuaries all salt must be washed off. Sacrificial zinc or anodes on a saltwater model shaft must be monitored and replaced if required. Make sure that the surfaces are clean, and it is good practice to remove and refasten regularly. The zinc must be fastened just above the lower unit. If the trolling-motor gets a season of hard use, get the trolling-motor checked and vacuum out all carbon dust. Nothing wrecks commutator condition or causes sparking more than excess dust deposits. The dust can seize brushes in brush-holders. The key to DC motor life is regular maintenance.

TROUBLESHOOTING TROLLING-MOTORS

The motor power is lower than normal

Be careful when using your motor when fishing in thick vegetation. If this wraps around the prop it causes overloads and higher currents. The high currents cause general overheating which affects all parts of the motor. Check for low battery voltages and for loose cable connections that cause resistance and loss of motor power.

The motor has lost one or more speeds

1. Check for loose connections in the speed switch and potentiometer.
2. Check for loose connections within the top housing.
3. Check the rotary switch for burning or other visible damage.
4. Check contact continuity or resistance with a multi-meter or short out each speed terminal to verify the switch contacts. If switch is in good condition one or more speed coils may have failed.

My guess would normally be that the PWM (pulse width modulation) board is not fluctuating as it should, but the above suggestions are from people who are in the business.
What I would also do is call a Marine Service Shop and see what they think...a lot of times they've seen the problem, and can tell you exactly what and how to look for it.
Good luck to you, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps!

Sounds as if the motor has either bearings going bad and/or water has gotten in the housing washed the lubricants out. Motors do wear out eventually. I'm not sure if the brushes are replacible. Have you checked for any constrictions like fishing line? And also the contacts on the controller could have minor corrosion meaning take it apart if possible and clean with steel wool or a dremel.

Trolling motor stays on same speed no matter where I set the speed 10 -100. It is at a mid range speed.

I just recently had a simialr problem. No speed control and motor only ran at 100. I talked to the minn kota tech rep and sent him my control board and he said it had a bad potentiometer...however, I had to buy a control board to fix the problem ($215). Hate to say it but sounds like you may need a new control board.

Same problem

Hello!
If you have a 55SC motor, it is hand controlled, here's a schematic:
55SC if this is your motor, I suspect the switch is gone, part # 2064023
If you have a bow mount FOOT control, here's your schematic:
Max 55 if this is it, I would first point to the foot pedal and/or the pcb control board. Best leave this one to an Authorized Service Center, here's the link with the list:
ASC Service Centers
...I hope it's just a switch for your sake ;)

On a Minn Kota All Terrain trolling motor, what should the MOM/OFF/CON switch be set to when using the foot pedal manually?

You should only use the MOM (or momentary) setting when using the push button the foot pedal. Con will just keep the motor running and your foot control will only allow for direction and speed!

The foot control speed slide is erratic it will stop sometimes

The potentiometer that varies the speed is probably dirty. Try spraying some "electrical cleaning solvent" into the pot as you move the control. If this doesn't help, you will probably have to replace the pot if you can find one or replace the speed control.
Good luck.

Prop spins slow on any speed on the foot pedal

There is a good chance that the control board is bad. This is a common problem with these units. I have replaced my control board twice. When the control board goes out, some function of the unit will not work correctly while other functions work fine. The first time mine went out, the prop motor would not work. The last time the board went out, the unit would only steer right.

Ran aground on lake, now stuck on high speed, can't lower speed

My Minn Kota 55 powerdrive had the same problem except mine occurred while it was trailered in the yard. High speed only, everything else worked great. From what I could research the control module is a frequent problem. Took a chance and purchased a new control module and this cured the problem. Maybe this happening and running aground was just concidental.
