The gear is worn or has sand or grit on the teeth causing it to not open up without resistance.

I would contact Polaroid directly regarding this issue to see if it is repairable economically:

Why does my camera turn on, make a weird noise and

hi. you have problem in lens unit and the weird noise come from to focus gear.maybe you go to the beach or dusty place thats why the said dust or sand goes into lens gear. If you can open and try to clean its better but if not bring to service center and request for cleaning and adjustment.

Noise + lens problem

Not necesarely a lens problem. It could be, but also it could be a software or mecanical problem. You have to take the camera to a local Olympus dealer for repair. You cannot repair this on your own.

Sand in lens.

Are you sure its sand? Usually it is the plastic gears or parts of them in the lens that make noise. Unless its under warrenty , time for a new camera.

Lebs makes clicking noise and sometimes sticks

dear terry your problem seems to be with the lense barrel  probably has the camera fallen on the lense or while the lense was out did someone try to push it in  the lense drive mechanism consist of plastic parts which can take a certain amt of external shock possibily the drive mechanism must have got disturbed so hence you are facing this issue it has to be opened by a qualified engineer who knows his job to sought this out

Frozen lens and shutter

Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
