Try a soft reset and hard reset your iPod Touch if it’s frozen or not responding. Try a soft reset first: 1. Press and hold theSleep/Wake button on the top of the unit until a red slider appears 2. If a soft reset doesn’t work, try a hard reset: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Perform a straightforward reset procedure on your iPod Touch if you are experiencing issues like freezing, unresponsive apps, delays or other other problems. Carry out a reset if your iPod doesn't respond when you attempt to restart the unit. This type of reset will not erase any content from your iPod Touch.

press any key to wake it up, if that doesn't work for some reason press the power button once. it should wake up. if all else fails hold the power button down for 5 seconds until it shuts off and reboot it.
try disconnecting the phone from the computer. then do a "hard reset" by pressing the slim button on top (the sleep/wake button) and the round button on the front bottom (home button) until the apple logo appears and then the phone turns off. Turn it on again by pressing the sleep/wake button. Try connecting to itunes again, if it doesn't work check for itunes updates or delete then reinstall itunes (your library will remain intact).
You can try a hard restart, which is holding down the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for around 15 seconds until the Apple logo shows up. If that doesn't work you might have to restore your iPhone.
If you want to restore your iPhone, you have to connect it to your computer. Hold down the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. Then after 10 seconds release ONLY the Sleep/Wake button. Your computer should say that your iPhone is now in recovery mode and you can now restore it via iTunes.

iTunes will only let you restore the iPod if you turn it off, hold the menu button and then plug in the usb cord connected to the computer as you are holding the menu button. the iphone will start in recovery mode and itunes will offer the restore. after that you will be password free, but your data will be erased, if you did a sync recently though, you can restore it from itunes. i work for an iphone repair shop and we do this repair frequently.
