Question about Projection Televisions

4 Answers

I have a Hitachi TV model 43FDX01B where the red shifted left about 2" and cannot be adjusted with the convergence setup. This happened suddenly after hearing a snap in the TV so something fried. I have no schematic.

yes I'm pretty good with electronics but only have a volt-ohmeter for trouble-shooting and no schematic of the TV. I saw another recommendation that it might be the STK-392-150 (3-Channel Convergence Correction Circuit) which looks like just one chip with about 18 legs out one side. I just don't want to go replacing parts at random and hope for the best but may not have much choice. I also don't want to send it to the shop for an expensive repair considering the new TVs on the market now.

Another observation on the problem while trying to mess with the convergence adjustment. I can move the red up and down but I cannot move the red left or right and the red line is stuck about 1 in. (not 2 in.) to the left of center. When I switch to the blue I can move it up and down and to the right but I cannot get it to move to the left. So there certainly appears to be a problem with the convergence but I'm not sure if that explains why the red shifted so far left (beyond the normal convergence adjustment).

I'm not sure I follow your answer. It sounds like I should replace the STK-392-150 for starters but what about the video control board that you mentioned? Does the problem I'm describing still point you in that direction and if so do you have any idea what the part number is for the video control board?

I'm still trying to get an answer to my question on my Hitachi 43FDX01B TV. Thanks.

  • Keene Little Apr 27, 2008

Thanks everyone for your answers. I'll replace the IC first (I'll order two of them in case the replacement fries from something that caused the problem). Since I have no schematic for the TV is there a recommended way to check the fuse resistors and/or micro/pico fuses? Can they be checked on the board or should I pull them out to check?

  • Keene Little Apr 28, 2008

Follow-up question for someone please. Where is the STK-392-150 IC located on this TV? I see two STK-392-110s with a big heat sink but I don't see the -150. I've only pulled the back panel off so if it's behind the front panel I guess I'll have to completely remove the whole enclosure. Thanks for your help.

You can first try fixing it by going into Service Mode, but I believe you will need to replace the IC you mentioned which can be obtained at this website ->
http://www.partstore.com/Part/Hitachi+Ltd/Hitachi/43FDX01B/Hitachi+Ltd/Hitachi/CZ00433/New.aspx
If that doesn't help, then we can explore further options, but I am confident that you will solve your problem with that replacement.

The following Directions are for getting into Service Mode

Important !
After you get to the item that needs adjusting
Write down the original setting
just in case you have to go back.

1. TV turned off
2. Press 'Power' and 'Input' buttons on the TV for more than 3 seconds..
You are now in the Adjustment mode
The letter P indicates picture and A indicates audio.
4. Use the 'Menu up or down' on the remote to select the item.
5. Write down the old value of the item before changing.
6. Use the 'Menu left or right' to change the data.

Thank you for using Fixya and have a good day

you can check the fuses with an ohm meter with them still on the tv

I believe that those two 110s are the problem and most likely you read about someone replacing them with the 150s, that's what I would do, I don't think you will find any 150s on the board, they would be next to those heatsinks if anywhere

I would suggest to replace the STK-392-150 first and check for open fuse resistors and or micro/pico fuses around the STK ICs.
In many occasions they burnt to protect the rest of the circuitry.
You can buy the parts from this website.

Replace the STK you will be fine this is very normal problem with the single IC. Replace this and tell me if it does not fix it. You can find that IC for less than 20 dollars.

Red convergance appears tp be off, seeing ghost images shifted left

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Model 43FDX01B double vision with red ark across bottom . and no user manual.

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

It is adjustable only in the technician menu. You will most likely need to replace the convergence IC's in the TV. This is a very common issue. The locations are IK04 & IK05 and are generic part numbers STK392-110's.
