I have problems with the Philips SA018 4gb MP3 player. While it is connected to the computer the it shows green once it is disconnected it goes red and nothing works. The battery should be fully charged as it shows green, but as I have said once it is disconnect it turns red and that's it...there is no joy.I wonder is there a problem with the battery...? Has anyone else had this kind of issue?

when you connect it to computer is it showing as hardware detected?

1 Answer

Firmware error

A) If the firmware failed to load, then the mp3 player has a hardware problem that cannot be resolved using reset, repair, or any of the other suggested methods - call Philips and see if you are still in-warranty.

B) The battery on this player wasn't meant to be replaced. Trying to do so will void your warranty. If you are out-of-warranty, take a tiny screwdriver, pop the case open, and replace it with the same type of battery listed in the product spec sheet - this spec sheet is available for free from Philips website. Before you try changing the battery, understand this:
C) 90% of the time, changing the battery doesn't resolve the issue
D) Compare the cost of buying the new battery versus buying a new mp3 player before plunking down on a new battery.

Dead after false upgrading

Hit volume + and reconnect the GoGear to the computer - after several seconds of holding the volume + button, Windows should reload the drivers.

Philips HDD1630 MP3 Player about 2 years old, no excessive use, won't charge any more or be seen by computer. Only shows low battery on screen then dies. I am a little technically incline, can anyone tell...

You may have to change the battery, but try Reset, Repair, and Update (firmware upgrade) first. Also, there is an FAQ on the Philips website for the computer does not recognize device issue (but only follow it AFTER you have tried reset, repair, and update).

Open Philips Device Manager and try repairing the device. [connect your GoGear to the computer, open Philips Device Manager (Start-->All Programs-->Philips), and click on the repair tab. Now, disconnect your GoGear from computer. Turn the GoGear off if it is not already. Press and hold the volume + key and connect the GoGear to the computer (while still pressing the volume +). A window will pop up saying a repair is being performed. now you can let go of the Volume + button. The repair will get your device working normally again. WARNING: the repair process will delete any music/other media file from your GoGear.]

After repair, perform a firmware upgrade ("Update" tab in Philips Device Mgr while GoGear is connected to computer - see Philips website for more details)

Worst case scenario - Even rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charging cycles. The battery for the SA178 is an LI-Polymer 300mAh 12-hr battery. Philips won't fix it for you, but you might want to find a local repair service.

Its dead & I have no music.

the battery is dead completely you either have to get a new battery or borrow one from someone, put the new battery in switch on the go gear plug in the chargerr then put your old battery back in (keeping the charger in and the go gear on) keep it on charge and it should be ok, i bought a job lot of em with the same fault all worked no problem after that
