I have been having the same problem. I have discovered that turning printer off when not using it works pretty well. If I forget, I unplug the A/C from the power adapter for a few minutes (2 - 3) and the printer usually powers up then. Some times I have to repeat these steps. Not a good fix, but at least it becomes usable. I suspect the power supply may have an overheat issue, maybe marginal capability. I look for fixes every few months and found this posting. Thanks. The scan function might not work correctly if the Digital Imaging Monitor (DIM) is not running. Follow these steps to make sure that it is running.

  1. Click the Start button, type run into the Start Search box, and then click Run in the Start menu. The Run window opens.
  2. In the Open box, type MSCONFIG and click OK . The MSCONFIG utility window opens.
  3. Click the Startup tab.
  4. Select HP Digital Imaging Monitor . If it is already selected, continue to the next solution.
  5. Click Apply , and then click Close .
A message to restart the computer appears. Click Restart to restart the computer. It will work and the issue is resolved.

both printer and scan functions, to a location on the computer

    2. Detach the printer from the computer: take out the USB cable.
    3. Uninstall the software for the F380.
    4. Install the full feature software plus updates for the printer.
    5. Do not connect the printer until installation has finished or only when a message shows up, during installation, to power up the printer and connect the USB cable.

I have Windows Vista with an HP Deskjet F380 all in one. It will print but will not scan. I have downloaded from HP the drivers and all updates, but still nothing.

From your description, it's hard to say why it won't scan....Does it start to scan, or is there no response from the scanner at all?
Try resetting the machine, then try again. (instructions here) Make sure it is set up correctly and do not connect USB until prompted by software (see here).
If that doesn't work, see this article and this article and make sure you have a good power source for your computer and printer. Also make sure you use a usb port on the back of the computer.
Your home support page for HP is here,

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Scanner could not be initialized on Deskjet 4180 all-in-one

Most of the time I solve this problem by cleaning the scanner. You have to clean it real good. Take out the scanner bulbs and clean underneath the bulb sockets. You may not be able to do this. You may want to call a tech.
