The gear inside the lens is stuck, maybe some grit or sand got in there preventing it from operating.

Screen is black and pictures come out black

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

No shutter

The shutter can fail to failure of the control system. You can remove battery and card replace battery and while switching on tap the lens hood on your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck.
Use some air to blow between the lens to dislodge any sand particles struck inside. Unless you are familiar with handling of small devices must the camera be opened. The shutter motor/mechanism can be jammed , manually try and release if not check voltage on the motor to confirm the fault.

Get estimate before you decide. It will be good to have it checked at the authorised service as you do not have to run around for spares.

First, try releasing the shutter with the lens off anf the camera set to a long exposure. Watch the shutter through the lens mount to see if it opens all the way. If it doesn't you need a new shutter. This might be covered by Canon's warranty. If the shutter is opening, try to see if something is blocking the CCD. If that is the case, a competent technician should be able to remove the offending piece.
