The issue is likely a worn motor carbon brush. If the machine fills in then start and apparently completes the cycle without the drum turning, then it is indeed a worn carbon brush.

Replace the carbon brush to address the problem.

My washer wont spin,

If you had to empty the water manually, i.e the outlet pump did not drain the water out then I would suggest the pump is either blocked or has failed. This will normally prevent the spin cycle from occurring. Try checking and cleaning the pump filter out.

Water heater keeps running

yes it could be the cause; so could a wrong; too high setting
remove power using the house main circuit board panel then: remove the
two panels upper and, lower pull back the insulstion and, you will see:
a round plug with a hexagonal flange these are the heating elements (flanges)
and, the thermostats (brown retangular switches with a red dial; check the dial for temperature that might be too high a setting.

Cycle won't start just makes a humming noise

if you have just installed this machine or it has been moved out make sure that the water supply taps are on as the humming sound could be the water selanoids (electronic water vales that allow water to flow) if there is no water in the machine it will not advance, check water selanoid, check to see if another prrogram give the same fault, put your ear close to the machine to see if you can lacalise the sound (never remove the the caseings without turning power off 1st very real chance of electric shock)

Whirlpool DU8900 XT-5 the water comes in at beginning of cycle and the heater heats the water, but the machine does not go any further. it kinda' hums but no water gets pumped and moving. at end of cycle...

if you can hear a low humming noise when it should be pumping water round, then suspect the circulating pump.
fault can be motor capacitor - low cost part
or
pump seized - see if you can turn it by hand
